When, where and how did the band come
together : We’ve known each other since we were
all teenagers, and we met while playing shows every weekend in church
basements and VFW halls. We all started out in different bands but
we were such good friends that we wanted to see what would happen
if the five of us would write songs together. We wrote songs, recorded
them, started playing shows, and it was pretty clear we were on
to something good.
Best description of your sound to
someone who is yet to hear you would be... pretty
simply – a real band. With our newest record, we kept ourselves
from using the triggers and cut and paste production a lot of bands
use these days because we wanted to show our ability to perform
well with each other. We kept the sound more raw than most records
these days and it fits with the rock sound we’ve gotten in our songwriting
this time around.
Someone who isn't too familiar with
your stuff, which release would you suggest they start with? We
All Need a Reason to Believe is our newest release, and it definitely
shows our growth as musicians and songwriters, and it’s definitely
our most honest release in terms of what the songs are about so
I would start there.
What is your latest release, give
it a plug, tell us about it. Our newest album is
called We All Need a Reason to Believe. It was released at the end
of the summer, and it’s our second record. The record is all about
having to go through a lot of tough times, but seeing past the negativity
in all of that to find a positive. It could have been a completely
different record than what it is, but we wanted to show people that
there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, rather than dwell on being
stuck there.
Favourite song to play live.. and
why? I’ve been really into playing a lot of the
songs from the new record, but The Good Life is becoming a favorite
for all of us because it’s not a typical song you’d expect to hear
from a band that came up the way we did, but listening to it you
can tell that we’ve incorporated a lot of influences outside of
what we initially lead to believe, and it’s great to see the reaction
it gets when people are exposed to that.
If you could go back in time and write
any one song.. what would it be.. None of us can
really sit and want to take credit for something someone else did.
We’d rather just try and listen to whatever song comes to mind and
take what’s good about it and make it better.
Most memorable moment / best achievement
with the band to date would be... Putting out our
new record. It’s been a long time in coming and it’s great to finally
have it out there.
Have you toured with any of the Soundwave
bands before? If so, give us a quick story.. We
actually just got done touring with Bayside this fall in the States,
so it will be good to get to hang out with them overseas too. There
aren’t too many crazy stories though, but we did have a lot of good
times with them and I’m sure there will be more to have since we
all know each other so well now.
Which bands on the Soundwave lineup
are you most likely to be found partying with after the show?
I guess it all depends on who we’re hanging out with the most. I
wouldn’t be surprised to see us hanging out with the Bayside, Audition,
or Houston Calls guys though.
Who in your band is the party animal?
Give us a quick story on antics of the past.. I
don’t know… none of us are really too crazy. We were when we first
started touring but now that we’ve spent so much time on the road
we’ve kind of settled down. We spend a lot more time on things like
writing new music and things like that. Every once in a while we’ll
have our moments though. Everyone does.
You haven't been to Australia before...
What have you been told to expect by fans / other bands etc
All of our friends have told us how awesome the kids in Australia
are. I’m really excited to play for kids in a new country, I never
know what to expect when we do that.
Thing you are most looking forward
to about coming to Australia this summer? The fact
that it’s actually summer there now and not winter, like it will
be in America. As I’m answering these questions, it’s 20 degrees
Fahrenheit here, which is below freezing. It’ll be a relief to be
in warm weather at the end of February.
Is there anything you "just have to
do" while you are in Australia? I think that’s pretty
obvious – unless it’s too tourist-y – take a picture with a Koala
bear. I’d also like to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I’ve heard
incredible things about the view from the top.
If the rider fairy was to grant you
one wish, what would be awaiting you backstage at the festival..
One Koala bear. Must be playful.
You should catch us when we play Soundwave
because.. It’ll be our first time playing in Australia
and we can’t wait to show you how our music translates from record
to live performance. We’ve been excited to bring our show over to
you ever since we heard we were coming, so it will definitely be
an experience to see.
Any Final words...
Thank you all for supporting our band and for coming to see us,
we’ll see you guys at the shows. |
