Band
: We’re called The Subways and when we’re not robbing
you we’re making love to you.
Website : www.thesubways.net
- The .net adds an element of universality, doesn’t it. We’re
basically saying if you live somewhere on the planet earth then
feel free to visit this website. If you’re human and have
opposable thumbs then you might even be able to read what’s
on it. Enjoy!
Hometown : Well,
we originally came from a town called Welwyn Garden City just north
of London – a rather drab and sterile little town that was
built during World War II for the spinsters who sought refuge from
the Blitz. We moved around from house to house about fifteen or
so times in that town before moving out to a village called Tonwell,
which was even less inspiring for such young and spunky go-getters
as ourselves. We moved back to Welwyn and around about the same
time we started playing shows in London and kicking the scene in
the arse.
When, where and how did the band come
together : The band was primarily the brain-child
and the beautiful collaboration of utter boredom and the will to
not just hang around like all the other kids and do drugs and hang
out on the streets and actually do something inspiring and creative
with our time. Josh and I were taken to our first ever rock concert
with our dad at the barely ripe ages of 11 and 12 to see AC/DC at
Wembley stadium. It was the catalyst, and from there we got into
Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins and started jamming out after purchasing
our own shabby instruments. Charlotte and I were going out at the
time and she’d sit around and get bored watching us play badly
until one day I asked her to pick up the spare bass guitar and join
in. We were a band!
Best description of your sound to
someone who is yet to hear you would be... Heavy
rock with heart and melody. Oh, and you can actually hear our lyrics.
Someone who isn't too familiar with
your stuff, which release would you suggest they start with?
Our first single “Girls & Boys” off our new album
“All Or Nothing” would probably be the most appropriate
song to hear first. It’s one of our heaviest tracks to date
but definitely the direction we’ve been heading in all this
time and the direction we’ll be heading more so in the future.
It’s about apathy and ignorance and a sense of alienation.
I hate apathy.
What is your latest release, give
it a plug, tell us about it: Our new album “All
Or Nothing” is our latest album and was produced by Butch
Vig. It’s what we like to think of as an evolution and progression
from our last album, which is really what new albums are all about,
right? Well we like to think so. It’s very loud and it likes
to make love to the audio receptors in your brain. That’s
right, it has a life and a conscience and a will of its own.
Favourite song to play live.. and
why? I really like playing a song called “Alright”
off our new album. It has a flow to it and the phrase shifts give
people a really good chance not to just sing along but also climb
onto the nearest perfect stranger’s shoulders and crowd surf
to their hearts content. It has its mosh and sing along ratios perfectly
balanced and I think it has probably one of the best melodies I’ve
ever written in the middle-8.
If you could go back in time and
write any one song... what would it be. “Be
My Baby” by The Ronettes. Perfection in the melodic sense,
the lyrical sense, the dynamic sense, the structural sense and the
orchestration of it is sublime. Scrap that, it’s perfect as
it is and I’d probably screw the whole thing up if I went
back in time and wrote it.
Most memorable moment / best achievement
with the band to date would be... Playing Reading
Festival 2008. It was our fifth year in a row playing that festival
and it felt like that moment had been the progressive accumulation
of all those years put together and the place just erupted. Charlotte
and I gave each other a look that just summed up the whole experience.
It was somewhere between sex-face, meditation and pure unadulterated
energy. 45 minutes of mental.
Have you toured with any of the Soundwave
bands before? If so, give us a quick story.. We
toured with Billy Talent before in Germany and here’s an awesome
scoop for you: they extremely nice guys and seriously fucking rock.
That’s a long way of saying MARRIAGE MATERIAL.
Which bands on the Soundwave lineup
are you most likely to be found partying with after the show?
Probably Billy Talent before they get really bored and annoyed by
our constant adulating presence. We played with Less Than Jake at
a festival in 2008 and those guys seriously changed people’s
lives that night so I’ll probably offer to buy all those guys
some beers. I love Rival Schools so I fear you may catch me getting
all fan boy on their talented arses.
Who in your band is the party animal?
Give us a quick story on antics of the past.. I’ve
got an awesome little antic for you here… After our shows
our drummer Josh usually goes to his bunk and sleeps, Charlotte
sips white wine with our crew talking about the Bronte sisters and
I’m usually found playing ping pong til the sweet hours of
the morning. Now THAT is a party, eh..! But seriously, we’re
all heavy drug users and consider ourselves highly sophisticated
misogynists.
You have been to Australia before...
What's the best memory stuck in your mind? We’ve
all been to Australia a bunch of times before. Josh and I have been
over with our family about six or so times and Charlotte has been
maybe four or five times since she was very young. We love Australia
and probably the most enduring memory for us is the great weather
and the fantastic people. Very chilled out and a wonderful place
to be! That’s why we keep coming back!
Thing you are most looking forward
to about coming to Australia this summer? Milo chocolate
powder. My my my I used to put that stuff in my milk and drink it
by the gallons! Also wearing sandals and a bathing suit most of
the time has got to be the sexiest idea ever.
Is there anything you "just have
to do" while you are in Australia? I’m
going to have to eat as much fish and drink as much lager as I possibly
can. I’ll also be stocking up on Cherry Ripes and Red Indians
to take back to the UK with me. The best sweeties in the world!
If the rider fairy was to grant you
one wish, what would be awaiting you backstage at the festival..
Three crates of Victoria Bitter, a vast array of Chinese food, a
heroic stack of chocolate treats and a stash of reading material!
You should catch us when we play Soundwave
because.. The world is about to blow up and we’re
going make sure you don't waste a second before we’re all
thrust into oblivion!
Any Final words...
Final words are always eight words too long!
