When, where and how did the band come
together : In 1998, Erik (keyboard) and I (David,
guitar) had the idea to start a band when we were in high school.
We didn't know how to play music and we recruited our friend who
had a french horn so we could be a ska band. That idea didn't really
pan out, but somehow we turned into a real band at some point along
the way.
Best description of your sound to
someone who is yet to hear you would be... an 8-bit
Nintendo game being eaten by a bear!
Someone who isn't too familiar with
your stuff, which release would you suggest they start with?
Probably The Mechanical Hand, our 2nd full length. It gives a nice
eclectic sampling of all the danciness, heaviness, and randomness
we are known for, and has the catchiest songs that will attack you
like brain cancer.
What is your latest release, give
it a plug, tell us about it. A Natural Death. Its
a much darker and aggressive effort. It starts with the realization
of the horror of birth and ends with the acceptance of the meaninglessness
of all human activity in the face of infinity. Its about the struggle
for survival and the harshness of nature. Its also very sexual.
Its take a little more effort to get into, but your efforts will
be rewarded with a deeper understanding of your life.
Favourite song to play live.. and
why? Birdo. The song was expertly crafted to be
the perfect live song. Its finely tuned pure musical energy. If
you could go back in time and write any one song.. what would it
be.. Happy Birthday. A truly timeless classic that reaches across
all cultural boundaries.
Most memorable moment / best achievement
with the band to date would be... Well, we booked
a 3 month 40 country world tour by ourselves. Paid for it and planned
it with no help from anyone. Made it back alive too!
Have you toured with any of the Soundwave
bands before? If so, give us a quick story.. The
first day of our tour with Poison the Well, Erik threw a jar of
salsa and a bag of chips at the ceiling fan in the backstage room,
thus spraying the entire room with our snacks. Then he insulted
the venue and threatened the security while on stage, and then pulled
down his pants and stuck his hand in his butt. Needless to say,
we got cut off and then thrown out of the building immediately.
It was a good first impression we made on our new friends in Poison
the Well. Next day, they put us on 'probabtion' and threatened to
kick us off the tour.
Which bands on the Soundwave lineup
are you most likely to be found partying with after the show?
I don't think any of these bands can handle partying with us.
Who in your band is the party animal?
Give us a quick story on antics of the past.. After
downing half a bottle of Jagermeister, The General (our singer)
was violently and passionately giving some girl outside our van
the middle finger. He got a little too excited, and poked out part
of his cornea with his finger nail! For the rest of the tour we
had to visit a local optometrist every morning to make sure that
his eye was healing properly. He wasn't allowed to sweat on his
face for 2 weeks, so we had a stuffed tiger stand in for him as
singer. He milli-vanillied it, and Nathan hid behind the amps singing,
while the tiger took center stage and lip-synched.
You have you been to Australia before...
What's the memory most stuck in your mind... Yes,
our really hot and amazing tour manager MJ!
Thing you are most looking forward
to about coming to Australia this summer? Seeing
MJ again.
Is there anything you "just have
to do" while you are in Australia? MJ. B)
If the rider fairy was to grant you
one wish, what would be awaiting you backstage at the festival..
A tray of carrots, celery, and broccoli.
You should catch us when we play Soundwave
because.. Its a high intensity sexual show, not
meant for the pregnant, elderly, or those with a heart condition.
