When, where and how did the band come
together : Toby, Matt, and I (Devin) went to college
together at Winthrop University. We played in other bands together
and decided to get more serious, so we started Emery and moved to
Seattle, Washington, in 2001.
Best description of your sound to
someone who is yet to hear you would be... Post-Hardcore
Screamo Neo-Rock-a-matic…or Rock, if you prefer.
Someone who isn't too familiar with
your stuff, which release would you suggest they start with?
Most everyone’s favorite is ‘The Question’. My personal favorite
is ‘I’m Only A Man’, but our latest EP would be a good representation
as well. Its called ’While Broken Hearts Prevail’.
What is your latest release, give
it a plug, tell us about it. I kinda just did, but
I will again. It is called ‘While Broken Hearts Prevail’ and I think
it is a culmination of all our past records. It ranges from heavy
to pretty melodic and encompasses who we are as a band. We decided
to do an EP to bridge from our last album to the next. We were going
through contract changes so we didn’t want to wait 2 years before
another record…so this was kind of an interim.
Favourite song to play live.. and
why? Right now, “The Smile, The Face” and “Edge
of the World”…cause they are new.
If you could go back in time and write
any one song.. what would it be.. Probably “Across
the Universe” by the Beatles. Never thought of that much, but that
song came to mind.
Most memorable moment / best achievement
with the band to date would be... Probably when
we first were signed to a label. We had worked so hard for it and
it finally happened.
Have you toured with any of the Soundwave
bands before? If so, give us a quick story.. We
have toured with Underoath, Anberlin, Red Jumpsuit, Chiodos, Silverstein…
On the first Tooth and Nail Tour, we were with Anberlin and mewithoutyou
and there are almost always end of tour pranks. Mewithoutyou had
a shuttle bus-type rig for the tour, so Anberlin filled it with
dead fish, crickets and mice while they were on stage. Mewithoutyou
didn’t take it so well and one of the guys’ wives peed in a cup
and poured it on Anberlin’s tour manager’s head. It was cool.
Which bands on the Soundwave lineup
are you most likely to be found partying with after the show?
Probably Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains and maybe Trent R.
We’ll see if they can hang… more than likely Underoath, I imagine.
Who in your band is the party animal?
Give us a quick story on antics of the past.. That
would be no one. However, everyone in the band would say that Toby
is the craziest, by far. He is loud, crazy and funny most of the
time. Whether he has broken many things intentionally or unintentionally
can be debated, but he keeps the party live most of the time. He
likes to yell out the bus window at people as we drive down the
street, mainly bums. It’s all in good fun.
You have been to Australia before...
What's the memory most stuck in your mind... The
first time we walked out on the stage in Sydney with about 5000
people watching. It was amazing. We were with Story of the Year
and Flogging Molly, so it was a blast.
Thing you are most looking forward
to about coming to Australia this summer? Australia
is beautiful, so hopefully we get to do some more sightseeing on
our days off. Also, we get to go back to Perth. It’s our favorite
place.
Is there anything you "just have to
do" while you are in Australia? I’ve always wanted
to go to the outback or maybe snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef.
If the rider fairy was to grant you
one wish, what would be awaiting you backstage at the festival.
