ON THE RECORD :: |
![]() The name of our album is Underneath the Owl. How did the name come about? Pagan imagery and sociopolitical oppression. It was released on March 10 in the US. Late February in Australia I believe. We recorded it at The Hobby Shop in Los Angeles, CA. Tell us a bit about the studio and why you chose to record there? We did our previous record there and were really happy with it. We recorded it with Mudrock. Tell us a bit about the engineer / producer and why you chose to record with them? He blackmailed us into doing it with him. He can be very threatening when he's cornered. Tell us about the writing / pre-production process, how long did it take and how did you go about it? We didn't have a proper pre-pro or writing session. Some of the songs on the record are a couple of years old. We wrote it over a long period of time and we sort of winged it in the studio. It took us beer and whiskey to record it. Tell us a bit about the recording process the band used. We always record all the rhythm tracks live then overdub leads and vocals. We recorded a lot of songs and slowly cut tracks to end up with the record that you have here. Gear wise, was there anything outside your usual live equipment used? Yes quite a bit. I used Bogner and Fender amps that I don't use live. An arsenal of guitars that are unavailable to me on tour. That's part of what I love about recording. I get to mess around with so much cool gear that I otherwise wouldn't have access to. It's awesome. Any memorable moments during the process that stood out? It was relatively uneventful, in a good way. We holed up in the studio sleeping on mattresses on floors and bunk beds so we didn't get out too much. We did hit the beach one day and get to see the Dark Knight at midnight for free. That was great. Who took care of the artwork and why you chose to use them? Kris Pierce. He is an old friend of ours and a super talented artist. He used to play in a band with me and mike years ago. He did the cover of the previous record too. He's awesome. Now that it's released, what can we expect from the final package? Get ready to have your socks knocked off! It’s a bit different from our other records so expect the unexpected. Keep an open mind... and remember... does anyone really want to hear the same record from the same band year after year? I’m really proud of this album. A lot went into it personally and creatively and I hope you like it. Do you have a favourite track on the album? I think we all sort of fell in love with Victory Lap, because it speaks to us about our lives on the road... and all our names are mentioned in it!
