ON THE RECORD :: |
![]() The name of our album is The Peaceful Atom Is A Bomb. How did the name come about? It came from an old photo of a grim reaper in the middle of a protest. We dug the phrase because it can make no sense or a lot of sense if you think about it. It was released on Friday 15th May, 2009, which is the birth date of the delightful Abraham Zapruder. He captured the worlds hearts by filming JFK getting shot in the head. We recorded it at Rancom St Studios Tell us a bit about the studio and why you chose to record there? It's a nice place filled with lots of old equipment, infact, it is where a lot of Lee Kernaghan's timeless gems have been recorded. This fact, combined with wanting to record to tape, made Rancom St. the place to be. We recorded it with Tim Powles and Ted Howard. Tell us a bit about the engineer / producer and why you chose to record with them? Tim's a wonderful guy, and very much on our wavelength. He's like rock'n'roll's version of Ghandi. Ted's also a rad cat and they make a great team, so we wanted to work in an environment where everyone was comfortable and free to be themselves. Tell us about the writing / pre-production process, how long did it take and how did you go about it? We had written around 40 songs, and most of them were written in the 6 months leading up to the tracking. But a couple of the songs had been kicking around for a few years in some shape or form. We just pooled all our demos and notebooks and started sticking pieces together for some songs, while others were done alone and brought to the band. It took us 6 weeks to record it. Tell us a bit about the recording process the band used? We recorded to tape then mixed in Pro tools. Gear wise, was there anything outside your usual live equipment used? We borrowed a couple of guitars from Marty and Steve from The Church. We used the Rickenbacker 12 string , but not for any traditional 12 string sounds. It got played through an octave down fuzz to make 24 string Amplifier Worship. We also used an old danelectro amp that once belonged to Tom Verlaine. Any memorable moments during the process that stood out? I set myself on fire to end an ongoing argument. Long Story. Who took care of the artwork and why you chose to use them? Caleb our bass player did the artwork, He's an ideas man. Now that it's released, what can we expect from the final package? Some rockin' tunes to be enjoyed by the whole family! Do you have a favourite track on the album? I kinda like them all, but it feels weird listening to one's own music, it puts me in a weird daze. How would you compare the album to your previous recordings? More focused I think. We were lucky enough to work with a producer and engineer who understood where we coming from and were willing to take the time to try out lots of different ideas. This album also tastes better.
