NANCY VANDAL
"QUITE PARTIAL TO ROCK | THE VANDALS VOICE #8

Available now from the band's website or their shows with Frenzal Rhomb

The name of our release is 'Quite Partial To Rock' EP - part of the Vandal's Voice DVD

How did the name come about? Well I really like rock but I'm trying to be cool about it. "Rock Makes Me Jizz In My Pants" sounds like I'm not in control of the situation.

It will be released on Vandal's Voice DVD #8 which is on sale now from nancyvandal.com and all shows.

We recorded it at Zen Studios, St Peters [ooh the glamour]

Tell us a bit about the studio and why you chose to record there. We have been recording various bits and pieces there since we began back in the olden days. Our first demos were done there, the Slippery When Crap ep and Selling My Faeces For Fun & Profit 7".

We recorded it with Jazzy Geoff Lee. He's been there the whole time so we're comfortable with his production stylings. He doesn't laugh at our incompetence which is also a plus.

Tell us about the writing / pre-production process, how long did it take and how did you go about it? We decided to do a comeback ep shortly after agreeing to do a few comeback shows in December 08. However at that time the comeback shows were to be in late 09 and we had heaps of time to rehearse and record. Then we got offered the Frenzal tour which meant everything had to come forward about 6 months and thus the recording was a last minute shitfight - just the way we are used to. It brings out our best.

Any memorable moments during the process that stood out? Well not in the ep recording but we also organised a bunch of friends bands to record a Nancy Vandal cover so we could celebrate ourselves with a tribute album. Our drummer Tommy Lee Turnip and a few of his old Demolition High Style colleagues were to perform a song. Unfortunately [or fortunately if you weren't him and are amused by such things], he got his cock stuck in his zipper after a too-casual post-piss dismount. It was really wedged in there and he couldn't dislodge it for about 3 hours. Of course - the recording session was on and time is money so he had to record his drum parts whilst his other parts remained in that precarious situation. The song sounds good though - such is his professionalism.

Who took care of the artwork and why you chose to use them? I did because I don't cost anything.

Now that it's ready for release, what can we expect from the final package. Well it's a bit of an unusual release in that the ep and the tribute album are in mp3 format on the DVD ROM section of the Vandals Voice DVD, which has a bunch of video features. Not sure if that's been done before but it seemed a logical use of the technology. There was so much stuff we wanted to do but didn't want to be pressing several separate discs so we opted instead for one super duper deluxe DVD package.

Do you have a favourite track on the album? I must admit the title track does it for me but they are all my children and I can't go playing favourites otherwise they will grow up with serious self esteem issues and hate me and become self harming goths. Not sure that metaphor really works but whatever.

How would you compare the album to your previous recordings? It's a mixed bag. A couple of songs sound unlike anything we've done prior [as we like to do] though we did throw in a Debriefing Room-esque number to appease fans who are pissed off we ever changed from playing just that style. We care.
