ON THE RECORD :: |
![]() The name of our EP is Survival of the Shittest How did the name come about? We tossed a few names around and this one seemed to tie in with the themes/vibe of the songs the best, it was also an easier theme to work with artwork-wise. It will be released on? We will be releasing it ourselves so it will be available at shows, select stores and online. We recorded it at Freefall Studios. Tell us a bit about the studio and why you chose to record there? We recorded it in a small studio in Sydney that is run by a young engineer who is starting out and getting his name out there, we had done demo's there previously and were happy with those and it fit in with our budget so we went back to do the EP. We recorded it with Antonnio Hanna Tell us a bit about the engineer / producer and why you chose to record with them? As above, we had done demo's with Antonio and were able to acheive what we wanted fairly easily, we basically took what we did with the demo's and spent a bit more time on it but tried to keep a fair amount of rawness in there as well, so it has a similar energy to what we are like live. Tell us about the writing / pre-production process, how long did it take and how did you go about it? Half of the songs have been around for a while but the remainder came out of a 3-4 month period leading up to the recording, we did some rough rehearsal demo's for listening purposes but pretty went in with a no nonsense attitude and bashed it out. It took us 4 days to record it. Tell us a bit about the recording process the band used? Pretty simple, we played along with each other to get each instrument tracked individually, then followed with vocals and minimal guitar overdubs. Gear wise, was there anything outside your usual live equipment used? Nick used a Fender Precision bass and a Sans amp (his usual live set up is either a Fender Jazz bass or Ibanez atk), Thom recorded some parts through a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier as well as his vox setup but ended up taking most of the Mesa parts out of the mix in the end (less metal, more rock!), I was considering adding cowbell purely for the sass factor but i ran out of time. Any memorable moments during the process that stood out? Nick trod in dogshit, that was pretty funny. Who took care of the artwork and why you chose to use them? Jimmy Fatal (from Grand Fatal/Jimmy Fatal designs fame), we chose Jimmy because he has done some pretty dang cool flyers and cd covers, we liked his ideas and knew that he'd come up with something cool and fitting Now that it's ready for release, what can we expect from the final package. 6 tracks that feature hooks, punk rock goodness and a little bit of epic-ness thrown in for good measure Do you have a favourite track on the album? 'Signed Up' How would you compare the album to your previous recordings? we are a relatively new band so this is our first proper release but we have all been in bands before and have done plenty of recording, hopefully this will be a stepping stone that will give people an idea of the sound we have started with that is bound to branch out/expand/evolve in the future.
