We get a bit softer with today's 'Whats In The Box?', I've plucked out the new album from Owen (Mike Kinsela of American Football + Cap’n Jazz fame). It's called 'New Leaves', it's out now via Hobbledehoy, and is perfect for those moments where you want something a little quieter, but still entertaining. Set's a mood well, find out about it by clicking Read More.

A BIT ABOUT IT
Much has changed for Mike Kinsella (American Football, Joan of Arc, Cap’n
Jazz) since 2006’s solo album 'At Home with Owen'. As he began writing his
fifth album, Kinsella became a husband and a father. 'New Leaves', like its title
suggests, is a new beginning for Mike Kinsella/Owen. It was recorded over the
course of two years by multiple engineers such as Tim Iseler (Wilco), Brian Deck
(Iron and Wine), Graeme Gibson (Joan Of Arc), Nate Kinsella, and, yes, some recording
at mom’s house. New Leaves retains elements of earlier Owen material - but
here, the arrangements are more elaborate, the song structures more complex, and
the lyrics more refined. Instead of lamenting failed relationships, Kinsella focuses
on the new beginnings they allow.
OUR QUICK THOUGHTS
Everyone needs a good chill out album right? There's only so much of the loud,
angry punk stuff you can put up with, so here is one that fits that category well,
(not angry punk - chill out). While not being the style of music I'll reach for
too often, there is a time and a place for everything, and after listening through
this one, I know it's one that I'll keep close by for those times when something
soft, simple and smooth is needed. It's not an easy task to hold my attention
when most of your music runs at a snails pace, but there is a certain mood that
this one offers, it draws you in and brings it from background music, to music
you begin to listen closely to, call it charm perhaps? The dreamy atmosphere your
mind wanders off into, the honest lyrics that your ears stand to attention to
catch ('A Trenchant Critique' is brilliant), all credit to Mr Kinsella for a quality
piece of work that will be enjoyed by many. A day in the sun, lazing around soaking
up the view, or a cold quiet night where the rain meets your window, keep this
one at the ready to be the soundtrack to those settings, and then some.
