:: INTERVIEW :: HEY MONDAY

You've probably heard their new single 'Homecoming' popping up all over the place without even knowing it's the sounds of the fresh young outfit Hey Monday. Set to release their debut album 'Hold On Tight' here in Oz next week, then tour our shores for the first time as guests of Fall Out Boy starting in a couple of weeks, it's busy times for the young band. I caught up with 19 year old singer Cassadee Pope for a quick chat to find out all about Hey Monday. Read More to check it and their tour dates out.
You guys all look fresh as daisies, how old are you all?
Elliot, Alex and I are 19. Mike is 21 and Jersey is 23.
What was the thing that made you personally want to start singing in a band?
I've
been singing since I was 4. I used to enter vocal contests and sing to
tracks at festivals and stuff. I always loved it but I never had as
much fun as I do when I get to share the stage with my best friends.
Even when I was in other bands growing up, it wasn't as great as it is
now with these guys I've known for years. I started playing in bands
when I was 13.
Your debut album came out in October in the US (next week here in Australia) on Columbia / Decaydance, how did hooking up with those labels come about?
Mike
and I attended the Atlantis Music Conference in Atlanta and met a man
named Jay Harren. He's our A&R from Columbia Records and we hit it
off with him right away. After he presented us to the label, they were
interested and had us showcase last December. After getting the go
ahead with Columbia, Pete Wentz had heard an old demo of ours. He loved
it and wanted to sign us also. So Decaydance and Columbia joined
together for us.
You've been promoting the album on some pretty big tours / lineups, what has been the best tour you've done so far and why?
I
think the tour that's really brought us a long way was the Bill and
Trav's Bogus Journey Tour with The Academy Is... and We The Kings. It
was our first national tour and we gained so many fans. We also got to
see some of our favourite bands every night. We also could never forget
our first tour ever with The Cab, This Providence, and A Rocket To The
Moon. That tour was a blast. We still remain good friends with all
those bands.
How was
it heading into the studio to record your debut album, with two big
name producers? Had you had much studio experience before recording
Hold On Tight?
It
was definitely intimidating. They are such great, fun guys that that
nervous feeling dissapeared after meeting them for the first time. They
really brought out the best in our sound and helped us realize just
what our sound was. All of us have recorded with our old bands. But
nothing on this level.
How have you found the response to the album so far?
The
response has been amazing. Better than expected. We had no idea how
people would take to it. Now that it's out, there's a lot of positive
feedback and our fan base is really starting to grow fast.
Obviously
a lot of people are going to instantly compare you to Paramore with
them being the current female fronted flavour of the month, who would
you say your major influences are both personally, and as a band.
Personally,
I'd have to say Michelle Branch. I love her style and her music. I also
am heavily influenced by Blink 182. That's a band influence also. We're
all pretty influenced by New Found Glory, Saves The Day, and a lot of
other kinds of music. We all like different bands but also the same
kinds of music.
You are
coming to Australia with Fall Out Boy shortly as part of a massive
world tour, has anyone given you a heads up on what you might expect
once you get here? Anyone from other bands who have been given you tips
of things you have to do while here?
All
I've heard is how amazing and beautiful Australia is!! I've been told
that it's very clean. I do want to visit some tourist spots and see
what it's all about. Definitely want to see all the wildlife we don't
have here!
It's been a pretty fast rise from formation - to release - to world touring, for a young band how have you coped with it all?
We've
really been able to just stay ourselves through everything. We kind of
still feel like we're a few kids in a band who are trying to make it. I
think the hardest thing for me to overcome is the fact that you think
you know someone, then something happens and you find out you have no
idea who they are. I know that happens in everyday life. But when it
happens in the industry, it's very scary and makes you realize you need
to surround yourself with people you trust. As far as everyone else,
you always need to be cautious.
Have you had any time between tours to write new material? Any plans for a second release?
We've
never stopped writing. We have a few song ideas already but don't plan
on releasing another record for at least a year or two. We want to get
this record out there as much as possible first.
If you could go back in time and write any one song as your own, what would it be?
"More Than a Feeling" by Boston!
What's your most memorable tour memory so far?
I
think the last day of our tour with The Academy is... and We The Kings
when all the pranks started was the most memorable. That and our first
tour altogether.
What's the single best thing that has happened to Hey Monday so far?
Getting signed was the best thing so far. I have a feeling the Fall Out Boy tour will the be the next!
Any crazed fan stories yet?
This
isn't a very crazed fan thing, but a fan collected her own photos and
also other fan photos with us and made a scrap book for us. It is a
really sweet book. The fans wrote litle notes to go along with their
pictures. It made me a little teary eyed!
For the Australians who haven't heard you yet, what can we expect when you hit the stage here with Fall Out Boy?
Expect energy and fun that'll raise the roof!!
