| Don't
think about it too much or get swallowed up by hype and
expectations and chances are you'll get into this album.
Sure it's not the Green Day we knew ten years ago but
they can still pump out an infectious song, and this album
is full of them. They may not hit you instantly, but they
will as you listen more. Follow the story, or don't, you'll
still find something on this album that will cater to
your tastes. Forget about your mate and his "man,
they've sold out and are just a pop bands now" calls
in your ear, give it a listen and make up your own mind,
chances are you'll be singing along in no time. |

WHO?
It's Green Day, no need for a who, surely?
WHAT?
Many years in the works, much hype, finally here. They lifted the
ambitious bar with 'American Idiot', it worked, so they're having
another crack. Once again there is a story that flows through the
album's three 'acts', a couple of main characters are followed through
song. But to be honest, concept and story albums don't really sit
with me, i like a good tune, I wanna sit back, listen and not have
to think or follow too much. Thankfully for people like me, Green
Day haven't gone down the path of having to follow the story to
enjoy the album. The songs stand alone as much as they probably
do in story. They aren't treading new ground, re-inventing the wheel
etc, they are simply delivering easy to swallow, catchy songs that
will appeal to many. Some would say that's a cop-out, sure, but
I'd rather see people digesting this than most of the other commercial
sounding tripe doing the rounds. The songs really grow on you and
are pretty consistent, not too much filler in the 70 or so minutes
they deliver. Time will tell if it will be another 'American Idiot'
for them, but I daresay if you enjoyed that one, you'll enjoy this
one. Plenty of potential singles will keep this album alive for
quite a while. Won't be everyone's cup of tea, but won't do you
any harm in checking it out either.
WHY?
The songs are solid, the production is massive and combined, it
sounds great. It's not the most incredible album going around, but
it'll keep you entertained, and ultimately that's all you want.
You may choose to go deeper into it and follow the story and get
more out of it than I did, but if the 'story' and 'concept' words
are keeping you away, don't let them, you can enjoy just listening.
