THE LOVED ONES - DISTRACTIONS
-- FAT WRECK --

SUMMARY
8 / 10
If you like your punk rock relatively simple, catchy, and fun to have a sing along to, then these guys offer a good option. An all-star lineup, so you know they aren't a bunch of hacks, they know what they're doing, and slowly but surely it seems to be paying off. A genuine vibe, cool tracks, some decent covers, and most of all a build up of anticipation for what's to come later this year!
WHO?
The Loved Ones are one of the most underrated punk rock bands out there today, thankfully each time they pump out a new release this Philadelphian outfit add to their fan base. The band features former members of The Explosion, Paint It Black and Trial By Fire. With two full lengths under their belt, they've taken the time to pump out this six track EP to tide over the fans.

WHAT?
This gap bridging EP features three new tracks, as well as three covers, of artists like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg and Joe Strummer & The Mescalaros. Having just had a bit of a lineup reshape, introducing two members of The Explosion to the ranks, you can see why the band would choose to put out an EP, even though the format is all but dead these days. It's a good way to give us a taste of what we can expect on the next full length, and the sound is a little different from past releases, in my opinion a shift in sound that makes them more appealing, and should help them continue to grow. It's a popular trend these days to blend the punk sound with a bit of Americana, and that's what they do well, their choice of covers perhaps solidifying the direction they are heading in, and if the three originals on offer are anything to go by, bring on the new album.

WHY?
A release mainly that those already fans will lap up, if you aren't yet aware who these guys are, then this would be a good introduction to a band on the rise. Their sound is very accessible, without being 'made for radio'. It may not be as hard and fast as previous albums, but i think with the new lineup, they've found what they are best at, take a few minutes to listen, because i'm pretty sure The Loved Ones is a name we'll be hearing a lot more of throughout this year.

WHEN?
The album is available now on Fat Wreck Chords through Shock
