one sounds like a band trying too hard to be something
that doesn't seem to be within their reach. Sure there
we some great moments in the 90's, but cheesy power rock
ballads haven't stood the test of time, and don't need
modern bands trying to revive them, i thought we all learnt
that lesson listening to Avenged Sevenfold, though at
least they have a sprinkling of grunt on their cheese,
this one, is all cheese. Expect to see any kind of movement
from the kids in the crowd wanting a dance to be replaced
by dudes lost in the 90's waving their lighters around
and flicking their permed hair back off their eyes, these
tracks will be a hit with all the roadie's on the festivals
they play. |

WHO?
Behind Crimson Eyes, Melbourne's most confused gentlemen of (insert
genre of pot we're shitting in this week) are up to album #2, and
this time it's a self-titled affair. Initially expected to be released
in October last year, the album is off the waiting pile and in a
store near you now.
WHAT?
It's not only the electrical tape that has been given the arse with
this album, perhaps it was also stuck in some places we couldn't
see, and it's removal, also saw a few balls go by the wayside. It's
an all singing affair, with any screaming / hard rock / whatever
else they did on releases past being removed, normally for my ears
this would be a blessing, but it's replaced with what i can only
imagine it would sound like if someone like Good Charlotte decided
to pay tribute to Alice Cooper's 'Hey Stoopid' album of '91 (there's
a reason the 90's weren't kind to ol' Alice). The cheesy vocals
often give you visuals of what you imagine the film clips would
be, all I can see if fluffy clouds and guys prancing around in bad
90's clothing thinking power ballads are awesome. Songs like 'Coming
Home' & 'Stay With Me' will have the teenage girls in the front
row dribbling. 'Fighting For Our Lives' and 'Armageddonouttahere'
as songs, are great, sadly the vocals completely kill it, though
they aren't as horrible as they are in 'Addicted', I hope there
is a punch line i'm missing and that one is actually a joke. Even
production wise, this one really lacks a punch, they're trying to
do a sound that more often than not is really big in sound, see
'Hearts Burst Into Fire' by Bullet For My Valentine, and any recent
Avenged Sevenfold wannabe ballad type stuff for comparison, and
their production at least tricks the easily impressionable into
thinking they are "hard rock", this one is way too much
vocal and way too little guitar. Obviously there are massive budget
differences from those bands, but previous releases have at least
had a much more powerful production.
WHY?
If you like great artwork, then you'll at least have something to
be happy about when you get this one home, awesome work by Joe Whyte.
I'm sure there is a market out there for this style and sound, I
can't really see it being favoured by those who've been following
the band in the past though. Or maybe i've just lost touch with
what the kids are into these days? Time will tell I guess!
WHEN?
The album is available now on Roadrunner Records
WHERE?
You can grab a copy from Play4me.com.au
for $25.32 or in all good record stores.
