- ALL ABOARD: A TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH |
--
ANCHORLESS
-- |
| There
were high expectations awaiting this one to be released,
a stellar lineup paying tribute to a great artist, never
an easy task to put together a project like this and keep
everyone happy, but anchorless have done a solid job,
using a wide range of artists, some outside their usual
comfort zones. Everything previously unreleased is always
a good thing, throw in the fact that proceeds go to a
good cause, and that should be incentive enough for people
to check it out. A few disappointments, but for the most
part it's entertaining. |

WHO?
Anchorless Records is an independent label based in Boston, USA.
They've assembled quite the lineup of acts to pay tribute to Johnny
Cash through this compilation. They also are donating all profits
to The Syrentha Savio Endowment Non-Profit Organization which provides
financial assistance to underprivileged breast cancer patients.
It features full bands as well as members of bands going solo as
they each cover a Johnny Cash track.
WHAT?
Kicking off with The Bouncing Souls the CD has a powerful beginning
as they tackle 'Man In Black', and do a fine job of it as well,
Next to impress is the gravel throated Chuck Ragan of Hot Water
Music fame, his solo styling's really suiting 'Wreck Of The Old
'97'. Slightly disappointing is The Gaslight Anthem's contribution,
I had high hopes when I first heard they were a part of it, expecting
them to be the highlight, instead their take on 'Gods Gonna Cut
You Down', is ordinary at best. Thankfully The Loved Ones are around
to lift things back up with 'Cocaine Blues', one of the highlights.
MxPx amongst these acts seemed a little out of place on paper, and
does too in sound, their pop-punk take on 'Hey Porter' stands out
like dogs balls, i'm all for diversity, but this one just doesn't
fit here. The Flatliners leave the best impression on me with 'Cry,
Cry, Cry', the standout track for me, they nail it. Coming in a
close second is the closing track, which comes from Russ Rankin
of Good Riddance tackling 'I Walk The Line'. A job well done. Overall
there is quite a variety of acts doing their best to do justice
to some classic tracks. Some get lucky, others don't, thankfully
this time around more get it right than wrong and we've got a pretty
cool compilation to listen to.
WHY?
Pick this one up if you want to hear some of your favourite acts
in a different mode, or if you are a Johnny Cash fan and enjoy hearing
some solid covers, plus it's all for a good cause too.
WHEN?
The album is available now on both CD and Vinyl
WHERE?
You can get a copy of the CD locally from Poison
City Records E-Store, or get the Vinyl from Vinyl
Collective.
