| A
long talked about release, finally the results are available
and they are solid. Three of the countries finest songwriters
in a mode that you may not have heard them in, recorded
anyway. The idea of teaming up is great, and hopefully
a launching pad for more of the same from each of them
in the future. Donnie is probably the most experienced
of the three in this arena and his tracks do stand out
that little bit more, but the other two are not far behind,
and with the experience that touring this around will
bring, i'm pretty positive that they are just going to
keep getting better, and I can't wait to hear more from
each of them. Full lengths please! |

WHO?
Tyre Swans are not a band as such, more a collective who bring their
own solo tunes to the mix and in the live arena help each other
backing up the main man of whichever track it may be they play.
They are Donnie Dureau of Blueline Medic, Darren Gibson of Lead
Sketch Union and Jamie Hay of A Death In The Family, each of them
have played in numerous bands over the years, and now we get a chance
to hear them solo.
WHAT?
Jamie and Darren each have four tracks and Donnie three on this
11 track effort. Expectations are high due to the quality output
of these guys in their other outfits and they don't let anything
slip as they dish out a nicely Aussie tinged folk sound. Don't be
put off by the mug-shot looking photo on the cover, this is no rough
'n tough stuff, Darren and Donnie have a smooth clear vocal sound
while Jamie brings in the husky element, each having their own sound
and style, but when blended together, works a treat. I've always
been a massive fan of Donnie's songwriting so his contributions
are an instant standout, and hopefully one day we can get a full
length of solo material from him, 'Harry Baker' is a track I could
listen to all day. Darren Gibson is the surprise offering on here,
having not really put anything out in this vein before, it sounds
like he's a veteran, with his Paul Kelly kinda vibe stories in a
song, 'A Friend Of Mine will be stuck in your head whether you like
it or not. Jamie Hay is one i've heard a lot about, but never really
heard much of, his songs have that vibe that a lot of the American
punk singers gone solo have, solid lyrics delivered in a husky,
raw tone, his tracks aren't as instantly appealing as the others,
but give them a few listens and you'll appreciate his talent.
WHY?
If you appreciate a good songwriter, then you'll pick this up, you
don't get one, you get three, and combined the talent levels are
dangerously high. The perfect soundtrack for a lazy afternoon in
the sun. You won't find any unnecessary parts, or over the top additions,
just a raw, stripped back sound, where lyrics and delivery are what
stands out. There is a story in every song, which is something I
personally love. Hopefully the next step for these guys is a full
length each.
