REEL BIG FISH - FAME, FORTUNE & FORNICATION
-- Rock Ridge Music --

SUMMARY
2 / 10
Growing up loving these guys i'm always keen to hear their new material despite for the most part being disappointed with everything since 'Why Do They Rock So Hard', the last album wasn't bad, but this one is just shocking. The band can still entertain live with their solid show, they just can't seem to get it right in the studio these days, maybe it's time they tried new things with the sound rather than doing the same thing over and over again.
WHO?
Reel Big Fish are one of the few prominent 90's ska bands who have not gone into hiding under a rock, constantly touring the world on the back of a handful of 90's anthems. The band's last handful of albums have failed to revive any of their 90's success, however a few fans were won back on their last album 'Monkeys For Nothin' And The Chimps For Free', after a busy year touring that, they now release this 10 song covers album.

WHAT?
10 covers is what you get on this album, you are going to have to be a pretty damn committed Reel Big Fish fan to find this album listenable more than once. It's cheap and cheesy really, the style the songs are pumped out in, is as predictable as they come and this may have been classed as "fun" ten years ago, but now it's just overdone and in long need of a few years rest before anyone should even think of digging it back up., but what is a band like RBF to do? They can still tour the world and pack out venues playing old favourite's, in recent times they've had one good and a few very average albums, so they have to keep pumping something out, so covers it is, and hardly enticing ones at that. How many times do we need to hear a punk or ska rendition of 'Nothin' But A Good Time' and 'Brown Eyed Girl'? They've been done to death. Let's hope Tom Petty doesn't get his ears around the horrible version of 'I Won't Back Down' offered here, it sounds like a band jamming it out for the first time, no justice is done to a great song. There unfortunately isn't even one track that stands out where you can say "ok, this one is great", nothing creeps up beyond average on this album.

WHY?
Pick this one up if you are a really dedicated RBF fan and can stomach a sound that needs a long rest underground. Maybe you'll enjoy it more than me.

WHEN?
The album is available from January 26th, 2009
