| Throw
a bunch of bands like Millencolin, The Hives, Foo Fighters
and a few more into a blender, with some whiskey, and
The Riverboat Gamblers are what you get. An album packed
with sing-a-long choruses, and a vibe that oozes good
times. Sounds like a band having alot of fun, and you'll
have a good time listening to it too. No two songs are
the same, so you are kept interested all the way through.
I am stumped as to why the band is not alot more known,
hopefully this album will be the one that has you jumping
on board the o' Riverboat. |

WHO?
The Riverboat Gamblers might not be a household name, but they are
no strangers to pumping out releases, 'Underneath The Owl' is their
fourth full-length album. The band's been around for a decade and
has been taking a serious, full-time road warrior shot of it for
the past six. Those intimate with the Gamblers' previous output
will know that no two albums sound the same, and once again this
is the case, in fact on this album, no two songs sound the same!
WHAT?
These guys tap into so many different sounds that it's hard to pigeonhole
them into any one slot, the first single 'A Choppy Yet Sincere Apology'
sounds like it's fresh off a recent Millencolin record, good luck
getting the chorus out of your head too, it's a cracker, 'Catastrophe'
could be at home on a Foo Fighters record, 'Alexandra' wouldn't
be a stranger on a Hives album, 'Keep Me From Drinking' has an old
punk vibe... I could go on forever. But I won't. It's refreshing
to hear a band offer an album full of variety, while it's easy to
compare their songs to other bands, don't take that as 'they are
ripping them off', because they aren't. Each song has it's own little
'Gamblers flavour thrown in. All the songs are upbeat, fun and give
off a good vibe, you can just feel that they are a solid live band
who've been able to capture that atmosphere in the studio as well.
I've only heard dribs and drabs of their previous material, but
if it's all anything like this, I'm left wondering why they are
not a bigger name. If you are looking for a surprise packet, then
this album could be the one for you.
WHY?
Rock is rarely happy these days, these guys make you feel like you
are in a bar full of friends with plenty of flowing booze at the
table having a good time. There's enough punk influence to appeal
to the punk crowd, the rock crowd should lap it up. Love a good
sing along, a catchy chorus (or 11), then spend some time looking
into these guys. They will be playing at Soundwave, don't be the
person who gets into them before it's too late to see them live.
Do it now while you have the chance.
