VICE PIRATE - DISCOVERING THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE [PEE]
I reckon a few years ago these guys were listening to The Movielife, a lot. Not a bad thing of course, because they have been one of the most underrated bands in the last decade and no-one has really tried to continue on the sounds they left us. Well these Adelaide lads seem to borrow some of those ideas and crush them into their punk / hardcore style that's laid down on this 7 track EP. If you like your punk rock fast, loaded with frantic vocals and a little left of the same old chords then check these guys out. The EP is a nice mix of tunes, no two sounding the same as the band isn't afraid to dabble around with ideas to give them a sound rarely heard from an Aussie band.

VARIOUS - 50 YEARS OF AUSTRALIAN ROCK 'N ROLL [WARNER]
It'd be a tough job to try and compile 50 years of iconic Aussie tracks into just 3 discs, but a job well done on this compilation that also includes some detailed liner notes and a nicely packaged box. The first disc is where it all kicked off, names like Johnny O'Keefe, The Delltones, Masters Apprentices, Skyhooks & Daddy Cool. Disc two features The Saints, Radio Birdman, Cold Chisel, The Angels, Icehouse and loads more while disc three is the most modern, bands like The Living End, Silverchair, Eskimo Joe, Screaming Jets, Choirboys, Noiseworks, You Am I etc. All in all 66 classic Australian tracks that you'll probably know the words to already, something good to set on as you cook the bbq and ponder that we haven't done too bad in the tunes department for the last 50 years. Only downside would be it's a little pricey given that most of the tracks probably appear on compilations you have laying around.

OUR LAST NIGHT - THE GHOSTS AMONG US [EPITAPH]
One of Epitaph's latest signings, one that will more than likely appeal to the newer generation of Epitaph listeners a lot more than the older. It's a debut album of 11 tracks. If you go by the bio they are "the fresh new face of rock" and "transcend trends and genres with their astonishing talent for creating emotionally charged music that will propel them to the forefront of rock!". We all know bio's are loaded with wankery though, and like the majority of cases those claims don't exactly match up. The band does the extremely over-done sing / scream thing, and again like most cases it's the screaming that ruins it, when you have dudes who actually have good singing voices, why you attempt to get all tough and scream is beyond me, if you are gonna scream, go all out and do it right i say. So yeah, when these guys sing, the songs aren't half bad, energetic, catchy and not a bad listen, certainly not the new face of rock though. If you like Story Of The Year, then you'll probably dig these guys. It's all been done way too many times in the last couple of years though, that said, i'm a grumpy old bastard, so give it a go and you might just see what I couldn't.

SHERWOOD - A DIFFERENT LIGHT [MYSPACE]
If you dig the modern synth infused pop-punk sounds then these guys will be up your alley. Simple to digest, at times cheesy, but catchy is what Sherwood serve up, so it's no wonder Myspace Records snapped them up because their target audience would pretty much go nuts over these guys. Think what would happen if Jimmy Eat World and Hellogoodbye got it on... while Paramore watched, something like Sherwood would pop out. While it's all been done before, these guys sit on the non-offensive to the ears side of the fence, a good singer, solid production and a few good ideas musically, which puts them up high in the ranks of the hundreds of bands trying this sound at the moment. You can sit through it without getting annoyed. Simple pop punk you can bop around to from a band that isn't caked up in layers of make up or have the 'stepped out of the "whatever's cool" fashion store' look.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - CHANGE! [HOPELESS]
Low cost compilations have all but been eliminated thanks to the internet, but the occasional one still pops up here and there. Hopeless Records and Hot Topic team up to produce this latest one for those who like their music a little more on the heavy side. A 21 track cd and 17 clip DVD in a cool little package for just $12. Bands like Every Time I Die, Chiodos, Parkway Drive, Converge, Poison The Well, Horse The Band, Gallows, The Fall Of Troy, Silverstein, Saosin and more are featured and like any compilation there are some gems, and some dead-set ear killers, but when you get so much for so little it's a great way to filter out the good from the bad and discover some new music. The DVD for the most part includes the same bands, but there are a few names like Escape The Fate, Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, Kaddisfly and Boys Night Out with clips only on the DVD. You are bound to find a new band or two you dig, and the price is certainly right.

THE MARS VOLTA - BEDLAM IN GOLIATH [ISLAND]
You cannot doubt the creative force that is The Mars Volta, you love them, you hate them, or you just don't get them. A much as I have tried to comprehend what it is about this band that has so many obsessed, i just can't. I can certainly appreciate that they are the true definition of unique, and continue to carve a genre of their own, but I just don't have the patience to sit through it all without my mind drifting off onto something else. Out of all the stuff that I have heard, I must admit this one kept my attention for the longest, and I found if I just listen in parts there were moments that I did enjoy. But it's definitely an album that will impress those who are obsessed with their work, not sure how many it'll drag across from the "don't get it" patch of listeners. You can make up your own mind though, it's all a bit too much for my simple tastes.

DANNY DIABLO - THUGCORE 4 LIFE [SUBURBAN NOIZE]
NYHC icon and former Skarhead member Danny Diablo has released this hip hop / hardcore album and gathered up a huge list of names to help him out, including Tim Armstrong, Skinhead Rob, DJ Lethal, Nekro and more. Sadly none of these manage to make this sound any good. Maybe i'm just not getting this latest fad of mixing hip-hop and hardcore, i dunno, but this shit is painful to listen through, sounds completely amateur and as if it was just meant to be a joke between mates in a home studio and not a full blown album release. You know it's bad when you can't even sit through a full song without reaching for the skip track button. Stick to what you are good at mate, coz thugcore doesn't work.

THE HAMPDENS - Asleep On The Lawn
This Perth to Melbourne outfit have to be due for an album pretty soon, a few months ago they gave us the great pop track 'Generation Y', now this ballad is their new single, you'll be hard pressed to find a better female vocalist in the country. They've already shown they have the formula for writing a great pop tune and this one is no exception. Bring on an album.

::: IN SHORT :::
Another classic from this extremely talented band, a successful fusion of a variety of sounds to create a unique and pleasant listen that will appeal to a wide audience.

TOURING AUSTRALIA THIS APRIL
Flogging Molly have come a long way since I remember first hearing and loving them way back on a Warped Tour compilation made me hunt down their 'Swagger' album. Thankfully I wasn't the only one who caught on way back then, because they have seen their popularity soar with each new release. Now it's time for the next installment and when your armor of instruments includes acoustic guitar, bodhrán, banjo, spoons, fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, accordion, concertina, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, mandocello, octave mandolin, drums and percussion you know you are in for a variety of sounds. The band headed to Ireland to record it and their take on celtic punk has never sounded better.

"Requiem For A Dying Song" kicks off the album with an immediate hook leading into a big sing along chorus, classic Flogging Molly sounds and the scene is set with all signs pointing to another great album.

"Paddy's Lament" opens up in a similar style, the many instruments the band use really taking placement up front in the mix, accordion and fiddle are sounding better than ever. A track that really picks up as it progresses and now you are in the mood for a little jig.

"Float" is the album's title track, and kicks off with vocals and acoustic guitar, before each other instrument is introduced one by one, a simple but effective bass line keeps the song flowing, coming in just shy of 5 minutes it manages to keep your attention throughout waiting for the next twist. Probably the most sober track on the album.

"You Won't Make A Fool Out Of Me" picks up the pace again with a nice punk rock feel, gang vocals and a general upbeat vibe, one of the albums best tracks.

"Lightning Storm" is another energetic track, as it's name would suggest, the fiddle and accordion once again standing out in the mix and sounding a treat, giving the track that extra something.

"Punch Drunk Grinning Soul" is an interesting track, while it had all your typical FM instruments, the general sound of the song isn't the norm for them, nonetheless it's still a great track and shows that they aren't just a one trick pony, they can break it down and rock it out a little, Dave King's vocals are at their best in this one.

"Us Of Lesser Gods" is another track where the focus is mainly just Dave and guitar to begin with and then everyone else comes in with their parts to fill out and continue building the songs, a strong one lyrically and has a real traditional feel about it.

"Between A Man And A Woman" is where the fiddle gets a chance to shine, even a fiddle solo! A rockin' little tune driven by a huge bass sound, for such simple bass lines they do a great job of keeping the song flowing and standing out.

"On The Back Of A Broken Dream" kicks off sounding like the perfect soundtrack to Benny Hill in one of his hilarious chase scenes. It's upbeat, fast and will get you moving. The pace remains consistent throughout and you have a very typical, high quality Flogging Molly tune, one that would be a treat in the live arena.

"Man With No Country" follows along well, similarly paced with a nice punk rock feel, behind the usual non-typical punk rock instruments, probably the fastest track on offer on the album.

"The Story So Far" will close out the album on a more sober note, pull out the lighters and start swaying along as we're closing up with a ballad that starts off slowly and develops into a big sing along, hopefully the campfire is lit, because that's what things feel like as the album comes to a perfect close.
