LUNGS - AN ANATOMICAL GUIDE [POISON CITY]
This one was released late last year to much acclaim from those who picked it up, now the band is heading out on the road to plug it, meaning hopefully more of you get the chance to get your mitts on a copy. If you like guitar driven melodic punk rock, then these guys are proving that you don't have to be in Melbourne to do it right. Members have done their time in a number of outfits over the last few years so it's no surprise that they know what they are doing, and how to put a good song together. There's flat out moments, there is sing-along moments and there are times you can just sit back and appreciate a good punk rock number that isn't simple and soul-less. The lyrics have meaning too, adding to the overall quality of the record. It's well presented, well played and certainly not your average run of the mill stuff. Keep an eye out as you are bound to hear more of them this year.

THE AUDITION - CHAMPION [VICTORY RECORDS]
These guys seemingly disappeared after their last release a good three years ago now. Their time on the sidelines has obviously taught them the formula to make power-pop / pop-punk. And they've obviously taken a close look at Fall Out Boy, borrowed some aspects and added a shine of their own. The same level of commercial appeal isn't there, but they polish it enough that it should appeal to this generations fresh wave pop-punk audience, the songs are bearable, but i can't help but sit back and say, yeah, i've heard it all before, many times. Production is spot on, without being over the top as some pop-punk bands tend to do. Vocals are tidy and easy to digest and it makes for a pain-frees background listen, but I can hardly see them causing any major waves anytime soon. There is a lot worse out there so it's worth giving them a listen, particularly if modern pop-punk is your thing. If it's not, then they probably won't be the band that wins you over.

THE CONTACT - CANVAS TEARS [SQUARE EYE]
Hailing from Canada this outfit have a big rock sound that could pretty easily sit up there next to the likes of Radiohead, Muse and Foo Fighters. If those three were to get it on, these guys would pop out 9 months later. Not really a sound that usually appeals to me, but these guys have that something that makes you want to keep on listening, it has the potential to be totally commercial, but doesn't sound like boring generic crap like most commercially appealing stuff does. The production here is massive and it all sounds awesome, the vocals are a highlight, the singer sure has a set of lungs on him. They get the points for turning a generally boring genre into something captivating, there's no reason these guys couldn't appeal to both the indie crowd as well as the commercial audience.

RISE AGAINST - THIS IS NOISE [GEFFEN]
Originally just a tour EP for Canada, Rise Against have now made these 5 tracks a digital EP for all. It contains two of the bonus tracks off the The Sufferer and the Witness album, the two bonus tracks off the Siren Song of the Counter Culture album and a song from the Lords of Dogtown soundtrack. So hardcore fans might already have the tracks. They cover Lifetime's 'Boy's No Good', 'Fix Me' and Nervous Breakdown', both Black Flag covers as well as 'Obstructed View' and 'But Tonight We Dance', two original b-sides. With only 9 minutes of content, it's nothing to write home about, but something for the avid fan to add to their collection. They don't slaughter the covers, and the originals are decent.

MILLOY - MORE THAN A MACHINE [HOUSEHOLD NAME]
Here we have a re-mastered re-issue of Milloy's 2005 album 'More Than A Machine'. This UK outfit have that whole melodic punk rock with gravelly vocals sound going on, drawing comparisons to bands like Leatherface, Hot Water Music and co. So when you are being compared to names like that, then you are doing something right. If you want a local comparison point then, think A Death In The Family, whom they've actually done a bunch of shows with in the UK. So if you are into all that kind of style, then you are bound to be impressed by this 5 piece, it's an album that's hard to put down. Well worth taking the time to go check them out, you never know they might make it out here some day.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM - SINK OR SWIM [RESIST]
The local release for one of the most earmarked bands to emerge in the last few months. The Gaslight Anthem are a band that will be talked about plenty this year. Their sound is a combination of folk, blues, rock and punk, all delivered accordingly with a nice gravelly vocal that draws you in. For a relatively new band, and a debut full length, the band has really set the bar high. It's easy to straight up compare them to Against Me!, and sure there are similarities, but the Jersey lads do have a style of their own which is why so many are jumping on the wagon and labeling them as the band to watch. If they continue to develop the sound they offer on this album, look out for their next! Grab this one now, you won't regret it.

PUDDLE OF MUDD - FAMOUS [GEFFEN]
Can you believe this band is still around? Still trying for that second hit wonder it seems. The only thing that really made me knowingly punish my ears by pressing play was reading that the producer of this album was none other than Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, All, Descendents etc) Now usually everything he touches is gold, because he works with great bands. Maybe there was an overdue bill or something that saw him wind up producing this "hey guys, we still think it's the 90's" band. To his credit, there is nothing wrong with the production, it's just the songs that are painful and will no doubt please the Triple M listeners who will have it force fed down their throats 5 times a day as "the best new rock". What were you thinking Bill?

DAMIEN RICE - LIVE FROM THE UNION CHAPEL [WARNER]
2007 was a big year for this Irish folk singer, and it looks like 08 will be even bigger as more people around the world are catching onto his great songs and awesome voice. This is his second live release, featuring 8 tracks, strangely though it was recorded way back in 2003 and only now getting a proper release, so it features some of his first singles like 'Volcano' and 'The Blowers Daughter' from way back in 2001/02. It also features a version of 'Silent Night'. The recording quality is great and his performance is rock solid. Anyone who has caught him live or is a big fan, or maybe a new fan who wants to hear some earlier work, will dig this cool little EP. Quite a talented fellow. For those who like it acoustic.

A collection of all this Melbourne band's previous tracks on the one disc, re-mastered from their 7" releases. Known for their explosive live show, that reputation transfers across to disc as well now, thrashy punk/hardcore at it's finest. Awesome cover of a Saints classic too wrapping up the CD.

GYROSCOPE - 1981
The whole disco-drum beat was a big thing last year, this year Gyroscope give it a crack on this new single. Fused in with their typical explosive guitar driven music and brooding vocals that continue to surprise, reaching new heights with each release. 1981 is a catchy number that'll get your feet moving and head bopping along, which is all you can ask for really isn't it?

INSTORES FEB 4TH THROUGH SHOCK

::: IN SHORT :::
A bit of a return to the loose / fun styling's that the band first offered us, a cool little theme, though a few tracks seem out of place in the way they are ordered, it opens up with a blast of great tunes, then slowly slips to good ones and then a couple of average ones. A bit more of the faster, energetic numbers wouldn't have gone astray. Decent album though overall.
Denmark-reared, L. A. based HorrorPops' deliver us their 3rd full length album with a bit of a concept, the songs based around movies or carry some kind of movie theme throughout, for the most part anyway. Back to a 3 piece for this album Patricia Day, Kim Nekroman and Henrik Niedermeier have always brought a bit of fun into the rockabilly / psychobilly laced pop music they create and have built a healthy following both live and recorded, so, how does album number three shape up?

"Thelma & Louise" opens up the album, following right on from where they left off on their last album, the production a little more schmick, but a great mix of music with the captivating vocal of Patricia Day setting the tone of what's to come, instant sing-a-long.

"Missfit" kicks off with some ska flavour until the bass lines draw your attention, a very sweet tone. A track that jumps around a little, with a surprising little 'tribute' i guess to ska legends Madness popping up out of nowhere 3/4 of the way through. Not an instantly appealing number, but given a few listens really grows.

"Boot To Boot" kicks off in an old-school flurry, again it's the bass that really jumps out and grabs your attention, a nice little psychobilly number with some powerful gang vocals, and Patricia unleashing a little more vocally. Those who like it a bit more intense will dig this track.

"Heading For The Disco" pokes a bit of fun at the 80's and seemingly judging by the lyrics a reality program that features Poison's Bret Michael's 'Rock Of Love' which is probably as cheesy as it sounds. Fun, upbeat track though.

"Kiss Kiss, Kill Kill" is a darker pop-rock number carried by some sweet harmonies, another track that grows on you with each listen, a great production with so much happening, everything comes through and sounds a treat.

"Everything's Everything" isn't a bad little number, sits comfortably in the middle of the album, doesn't really stand out as special, but certainly doesn't drag down the quality so far. The good type of filler.

"Hitchcock Starlet" keeps this film theme running, no prizes for guessing the content of the song lyric wise. Another slower, more moody type track, which only solidifies that the band isn't a one trick pony and can break it down as well as rock it out. This track really grows in power as it progresses. Worth a few listens.

"Highway 55" is a mid-paced number, it's about here in the album where another fast track would revitalize things, this one keeps things flowing, but doesn't jump out and step things up, has all the right parts to it, but doesn't really leap beyond "good".

"Horrorbeach Part 2" is an instrumental number which would probably come across better with some imagery, it's cool, but does just sound like most of the other tracks, minus the vocals.

"Refugee" , here we go, a bit of life is shot back into the album, an upbeat number that gets you tapping along once again, plenty of sing-along parts and a simple, but effective standout bass line. Shuffle away.

"My Picture" opens up with a bit of a clap-along before the moody vocals kick in, solid track, nothing amazing, but keeps you listening.

"Private Hall Of Shame" closes things in the style of the second half of the album, passable, but nothing amazing, it's catchy and whatnot, but so are the tracks before, and when you don't really end with a bang, it makes for a disappointing close, perhaps 'Boot To Boot' could've sat in this position and would've given off a memorable close.
