STICK TO YOUR GUNS - COMES FROM THE HEART [CENTURY MEDIA]
A mixed bag of sounds from this Orange County outfit who you could loosely slot in the melodic hardcore pigeonhole. When there is only some much you can do with this genre in a studio setting you look more to the 'potential to kick your arse live' as opposed to what the disc is doing through your speakers. Listening to this album leaves no doubt that they'd have no hassles at all getting kids to go nuts, they've got all the boxes ticked in that department. Back to what you are hearing, and to my ears it's all very same ol' same ol', grumble here, breakdown there, tough guy part over there, quick everyone scream at once etc.. however it's a hell of a lot better than the average stuff going around and certainly wasn't painful to listen to. The often really sudden changes from screaming to singing take a bit of getting used to.

BALLPOINT - GET LOOSE [DISCONNECT]
Hobart lads playing punk rock 90's style. Part serious, part taking the piss, no fancy trimmings or trying to be anything they are not. Obviously heavily influenced by early Frenzal Rhomb sounds, this album is as fun as they come. Anthems like 'Hobart Rock City', 'Keeping It Real' and 'Beer Song' stand out. Lyrically solid and meaningful (at times), you just feel that sense of honesty about them, when they say they are a bunch of guys having a good time doing what they do, you believe it, unlike many these days. It's not going to propel them to stardom or anything like that, and that's clearly not their goal, but if you pick it up you are guaranteed an album packed full of fun, honest tracks that you can sing, chant, drink a beer along to. Pretty decent production too, good to hear.

THE CLICK FIVE - MODERN MINDS AND PASTIMES [LAVA]
Fresh from five hours at the hair salon then a few at their stylists house, we bring you The Click Five. A band that more than likely has a restricted fan base, being 14 year old girls who think they're "hot", and probably no one else. Their sounds are as predictable, generic and house more cheese than Wisconsin. It's like someone threw Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and NSync into a blender, showered them in make up and left them in the paddock till their hair grew just right to style then said "it's time boys". Seriously why people throw money and time into bands like this is beyond me, if you see your kid sister with a copy of this, do them a favor and teach them to play frisbee with it.

TERROR - THE DAMNED, THE SHAMED [CENTURY MEDIA]
Maybe i'm just not in the mood to be growled at for half an hour, or maybe Terror have gotten really average and predictable on this release. Last years EP 'Rhythm Amongst The Chaos' was as solid as they come, but this so called "vicious slab of brutality" just sounds like a very average band, playing very average things.. in an expensive studio. The production is all you would expect from a big name, but the tunes simply fail to jump out and grab you, and to my ears, pretty much all sound the same. Average at best.

SIN CITY - GETAWAY / CAN YOU FEEL IT? [HIGH VOLTAGE]
Double A-Side single from this Melbourne based act who delivered 'Hungry For Love' late last year, these two tracks are taken from that album and serving the band on their current East Coast tour. Female fronted gritty rock with a catchy edge. 'Getaway' is a nice dark pop kind of number, driven by the vocals that really grab your attention, the soundtrack to a party on a ghost train perhaps? 'Can You Feel It' is a bit more gritty rock, it all builds up to a big chorus, one that would translate to the live stage well. Two solid tracks from a very solid album that's worth getting your hands on. Keep an eye out for the name.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - PUNK GOES CRUNK [FEARLESS]
Maybe it's time to lay the "Punk Goes" series to rest, the appeal has really dropped on the last few, but this one I think is the nail in the coffin.. or maybe i'm just losing my sense of humor? Whatever it is, this was the most painful to sit through. Thinking there would have to be at least one highlight on offer, I tried.. and tried, but nothing come up and did anything to change my mind. New Found Glory, no strangers to a good cover you'd think.. not this time, whiney vocals for an Arrested Development track, ouch my ears. That's pretty much the tone for all the tracks. Granted half the originals were no good in the first place, doesn't give much to work with, then those that were good, cop a beating. Avoid!

THE WEEPIES - HIDEAWAY [NETTWERK]
Deb Talan and Steve Tannen are The Weepies, an acoustic / folk duo from California who provide smooth sounds perfect for a slow day. With voices that really compliment each other the result is a pretty cool vibe, it's a little bit 80's, a little bit modern, but quite captivating stuff. Certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you appreciate some strong songwriting and don't mind the slower stuff sometimes, it's worth looking into this group, it sure beats all the commercial pop we get fed. Don't be surprised if you hear a lot more of this name this year.

LOCAL RESIDENT FAILURE - PUNK ROCKERS ANONYMOUS [INDEPENDENT]
Seven track EP from this Newcastle based punk rock outfit. Easy to tell they are influenced by the 90's Fat Wreck / Nofx kinda vibe and they do a good take on the sound as well. Fast anthemic tracks, that sound a treat, the production suits the style to a tea, a job well done in that department. Musically they've got it down pat, it really does make you feel like your in the 90's again, 30 second songs, Simpsons samples thrown in, put simply there's no chance for your mind to wander, they hit you, grab your attention and keep it. Good to see younger local acts trying their hand at this style, should be more of it!

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS - S/T [STOMP]
Comedy duo turned tv stars finally release their debut album. Those familiar with their radio or TV shows will know a lot of these tracks, now recorded properly they come up a treat. For those unaware, Bret & Jermaine are a Kiwi duo who write witty acoustic based tracks and deliver them with a great chemistry, bouncing off each other brilliantly. You don't have to be familiar with the show to enjoy the tracks, however when you have the visualization of what they come up with on screen, it really does add to your enjoyment of the songs. 'Business Time', 'A Kiss Is Not A Contract', 'Mutha'uckers' and 'The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room)' are favourites. Hopefully now the show is finally being aired in Australia it will open up many new fans to this creative and entertaining duo.

QUICKIES
STIFF VALENTINE - LOVELESS
Second album from this outfit that features Dinosaur Jr's J. Mascis on the drums. It's one you need patience for, long tracks that are part rock, part grunge, part punk and part metal. Problem is the songs really go nowhere, which is probably the whole intention in the first place. The whole buzzsaw kinda distortion sound has never really grabbed my attention.

REPTILES - HAUNTED HOUSE
Indie fans who like your buzzsaw guitars and discopunk drum beats, grab hold of your cardigans, because Reptiles will probably be your new favourite band. Everyone else... well you'll probably struggle, it sounds pretty much the same as all the other bands trying their hand at the genre, the singer actually sounds like he's in pain, dying slowly. Someone put him out of his misery please..

MUDCRUTCH - SCARE EASY
Not many bands from over 35 years ago can release a debut album in 2008.. But not many bands have Tom Petty in them. Mudcrutch is an early project of Tom's that has been brought back together for a debut album, and our first taste is this promising track that will have every Petty fan salivating in anticipation for the album. Amazing songwriter.

SCREAM HELLO - SMART & STUPID
Here's a band you probably don't know, but should! Just four tracks as a bit of a preview of what we can expect when they record their second album. These guys have been compared to the likes of Superchunk, and are not far off. Strong tracks with a unique flavour. Not the easiest to describe so I recommend you go take a listen, chances are you'll be impressed.

PANIC AT THE DISCO - THAT GREEN GENTLEMAN
Second single from the latest Panic At The Disco album, will it lift the band back to the massive presence they had on their last album? The new sound is pretty prevalent in this track, more of a campfire type sing along number as opposed to what they've unleashed in the past, takes a few listens but is one of the albums highlights.

"A Blessing And A Curse" kicks things off with a bit of a call & response thing going on, an interesting way to set the mood, on one side we have the singing of "We're getting closer to Babylon", and the screamed response is "Will you, let me go to hell, however I choose". It's an opening that will probably make more sense the second time around than the first.

"Fire and Brimstone" follows on, taking the introduction a step further, like every song that follows, the lyrics are strong and a quality that stands out through the album. This one repeats the "Will you, let me go to hell, however I choose" line many times as the piano comes to the front.

"When It's Blackout" is a song in a few parts, well structured and a bit of a ride, this one it's the vocal sound that really impresses, it sounds like a bottle of whiskey has just made it's way down Wade's throat, and the result suits the music perfectly. The song starts with a nice build up before the piano brings it all back a notch and it slips into a bit of rock as the chorus hits, one of the instantly memorable choruses, then things go really quiet before a final blasting. I think you could read into many different things when it comes to working out what this song is about, listen close and see what you come up with.

"Hold Fast (Sink or Swim)" is an upbeat number, well as upbeat as this album gets anyway, the tone musically and lyrically is very dark across the board, but this one stands out as a track of hope and positivity. The best chorus on the album hands down, it's a mood setter, one you can join in with and embrace.

"These Moments Define Us" strips back to acoustic mode for it's intro, as the seconds pass you can feel that something big is about to drop, and it does, with a bit of an aggressive tone to it all. A powerful number, one of the album's highlights.

"For Her" is a track where the piano really makes an impact, a hard hitting rock track but just peeking through is some great piano work, something to listen close for, it's not often you hear a piano in sounds like this. Another strong one lyrically, good chorus and solid verses really drive this one along.

"So It Goes" begins to wrap up the ongoing theme throughout the album, puts the pieces together so to speak. A very raw, honest sound has you paying attention right away, pretty much everyone listening would probably wish they could pull of the vocal sound in this track, such a simple track, a guitar, piano and a voice, yet so very effective. One of the best.

"Timeless".. who needs a bio when you can simply listen to this song, it sums up the whole album in four minutes. This song is pure gold, instantly catchy, all but inviting you do join in and sing along, and a chorus solid as a rock. Lyrics are at their most revealing as well.

"In Memory" is my favourite track on the album, and probably the most powerful track i've heard this year, if you aren't already drawn into the album's theme by now, this one will make sure you don't leave with questions unanswered. Crank this one loud, listen close and tell me this one isn't simply amazing. The perfect ending to the most thought provoking album this year so far.

The Verdict :
I'm a lyrics man, if an album doesn't have lyrics that stand out I struggle. I felt an instant connection with this album from the very first listen, it roped me in, made me listen over and over again, each time more close than the last, trying to find the underlying meaning in the songs, images in my head, maybe I got it, maybe I didn't, either way it made me think, listen and most of all, enjoy. Get your hands on this album.
