CAPESIDE :::::: |
THE BASICS Name : Lisa Gammaldi Band : Capeside Job In Band : Keys Website Address : www.myspace.com/capesidemusic HOME Hometown : Melbourne Hometown is best known for : Lord of the Fries Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : The Arty (and it’s late night disco ways) Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Not sure if I’m particularly influenced by a band from my town. Best up and coming band from your home town would be : The Galvatrons - they’re from the future. THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? Some people would be embarrassed to admit their band name came from a fictional place featured on Dawson’s Creek - we’re not. We should be…but we’re not. When did the band begin and how did it come about? Technically things began in 2005. Simo, Leigh and I worked together and after Simo showed off his skills of the pipes (I’m referring to vocals) it was decided that they should be put to use in a band type setting. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Flashdance fused with MC Hammer What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Right now it’s non-existent What image do you think / hope your music conveys? It’s ok to be a little fruity. In five years time the band will be… Still asking Simo to put some clothes on. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? It may or may not have had something to do with Huey Lewis and the News What was your first band name and what style did you play? This is my very first band. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection. There’s more than three, but I’ll go with: Motion City Soundtrack – Commit This to Memory Gratitude – Self Titled The Bronx – Self Titled. Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given Sometimes you just have to take one for the team. Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road Trial Kennedy and Rex Banner. Favourite song of your group? You’re Welcome The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is Meeting new people and hanging out with the boys. The thing you least look forward to before a tour is Being stuck in a van that is not so fresh, as well as the constant discussion of body parts and sexual exploits. When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Watching A LOT of crappy TV. ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? Korg Triton LE Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? Sydney...mostly because it’s where Kelly of Rex Banner lives. The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? I loved our Prom show. Bad dresses, mullets and 80’s pop tracks in between bands – I was in my element! Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Generally it’s whoever is behind the wheel. The co-pilot has the job of DJing to the drivers liking. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? The van isn’t really sectioned off as such; it’s pretty much just one huge vehicle of filth. There’ll be a bunch of empty red bull/V bottles lying around, empty ‘little bites’ and chip wrappers as well as several magazines featuring scantily clad people of the female variety. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? There are a lot of toxic gasses released in the van which make me question the chances of my survival. I won’t name the releaser of said gasses, but I will say it rhymes with ‘Rips’. Most embarrassing moment on tour? Probably the entire Boys of Summer tour, the humidity caused my hair to take on an afro-like form. Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… Cripps being ‘attacked’ by a bee in the van on the way to Brisbane – gold. Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? Food, Foxtel, some arcade games and food - seriously, we’re hungry! RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Hot Water Music – Caution and my own 80’s power pop/rock mix tape. Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… WHAM! – They’re just a couple of kids trying to bring a little sunshine to this crazy mixed up world. If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? People worrying more about image than music…oh and it’s probably about time for a nu-metal revival. As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… Bake some cookies |

HER NIGHTMARE :::::: |
THE BASICS Name : Baina Band : Her Nightmare Job In Band : Vocals Website Address : myspace.com/hernightmare HOME Hometown : Melbourne Hometown is best known for : Mindsnare Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : The Arthouse Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Mindsnare Best up and coming band from your home town would be : Worms Of The Earth THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? We started out playing American Nightmare covers and ripped the name as a joke. Then we started doing our own thing and playing shows, we needed a name... just kind of evolved from there. When did the band begin and how did it come about? We began in 03. We all grew up around each other and through a common interest in music it just came together. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? We play hardcore, not pretty, just heavy. What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Our current release is 'Come Anarchy Come Ruin'. From our last release we think it's a lot smoother and more mature. It's loud, fast and honest. What image do you think / hope your music conveys? Our music reflects on how we are as people. we have our own voices and opinions, and we're not afraid to speak up and things we're passionate about. Our music is a release for us from our everyday lives. We put everything into it. In five years time the band will be… Hopefully still having fun and still great friends. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? I've always been a fan of music for as long as i can remember. I bought a bass guitar in grade 6 and never stopped playing. I've always wanted to play in bands and write music. What was your first band name and what style did you play? Shit..my first band was i guess a punk rock band. Or at least what we thought punk rock was. We had a heap of names. I sang and played bass. We were terrible. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection The Germs - (GI) Small Brown Bike - The River Bed The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road I'm not gona say any bands i haven't met cause people aren't always what they seem. Jungle Fever are always a good time and a great live band. 50 Lions are one of my fav aus bands so i can't wait to tour with those guys. Favourite song of your group? For me any song of the new record is good. 'Burning Bridges' is my fav song to play at shows though. The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is getting to catch up with all our friends over the country The thing you least look forward to before a tour is knowing i'll be broke by the time i get home. When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Either eating or in the gym. I don't do anything else. ON THE STAGE / ROAD Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? Everywhere is pretty good. Sydney is always a fav for everyone. Our last show in canberra was one of our fav shows that we've ever done. we can't wait to get back there. The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? I'll say Canberra. It's rare for me to play a whole show with a smile on my face, but that show i couldn't help it. playing a killer show with some of our best friends. what more could you want. Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? You don't even wana know what kinda shit the others listen to over and over. I always drive through the night so i can have the stereo to myself and unwind from the rubbish i hear all day long. haha. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? We're terrible like that. within 1 hour into a tour our van is a disgrace. We're all as bad as each other. It's a bad place to be. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? Poi has his cock out 90% of the time in the van... Poi. Most embarrassing moment on tour? Chiz went missing in Newcastle for nearly a day. He was found in his jocks in some middle aged dudes house that he'd never met. We nearly had to cancel the show that night. He felt like shit after that. Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… just did Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? We don't have a manager and we've never had a rider. some water would be good though. RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Death Before Dishonor - Count Me In Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Worms of the Earth As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… finish my dinner. |

YOUNG AND RESTLESS :::::: |
THE BASICS Name : Ross Paxman Band : Young and Restless Job In Band : Bass guitarist Website Address : www.youngandrestless.org HOME Hometown : We live in Melbourne now, but Canberra is our hometown. Hometown is best known for : Politicians, porn, parks and pyrotechnics. Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : Hardcore house parties/shows. Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Our good friends in hardcore bands Brisk and 4dead inspired us to start making noisier noise and to sweat more on stage. Bless 'em. Best up and coming band from your home town would be : To be honest, I'm not sure. Where are you, new Canberra bands? THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? It was hastily agreed to minutes before the flyers went to print. When did the band begin and how did it come about? Our singer Karina recruited us all for a jam in March 2005. We were all strangers with no idea what to expect. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Noisy guitar music that is as metal as it is indie. Oh, and we have a chick singer! What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Our current release is our debut album, released last year and recorded with Tom Larkin of Shihad. It's a neat half-hour summary of our first two years as a band, short and to the point! What image do you think / hope your music conveys? People losing the plot, getting sweaty and messy and intense. Having a good time! In five years time the band will be… Not so young any more. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? I went to my first real punk show on my 15th birthday when I lived in Seattle. The energy of it was terrifying, but simultaneously enchanting and I knew I couldn't do anything else with the rest of my life. What was your first band name and what style did you play? My first real band was called Talk Of May. I was the singer and we played terrible emo-core. Karina used to sing in a Pop-punk band called Pacer who I reckon were pretty good. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection. If it was a total desert-island situation, I'd grab Refused - Shape of Punk to come, Daft Punk - Alive 2007, and Cat Power - The Greatest. Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given. Buy a guitar tuner. Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road We met the Bronx when they were in the country last year and dream about playing shows with those troublemakers. We supported Brazil's CSS on their last tour as well and they were great fun. We usually have a really hard time finding similar Australian bands to play with! Favourite song of your group? You mean favourite song we've written? We just smashed down a new tune that everyone is pretty stoked on. You'll hear it at Pushover. The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is New places, people & parties, getting on stage again! The thing you least look forward to before a tour is Getting up early, eating shitty food, not sleeping, hauling equipment, and being stuck in a van/plane/airport for WAY too long. When you're not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Karina works for fashion label Perks And Mini (PAM), I do artwork and design and write for JMAG (triple J magazine), and Nugie studies Architecture at Uni, so we manage to stay extremely busy! ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? We use a pretty boring standard backline - Marshall & Ampeg, although Nugie swears by his Yamaha kit over a Pearl any day. Our guitarist Josh plays a Fender Tele and I play a Fender Jazz. Oh and Karina has her own mic (cause in-house mics make you sick). Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? We've had loads of fun in just about every place we've been, but we stand by Adelaide as our favourite city because we played our first ever interstate shows there! It's also full of really nice people and great bands. Brisbane and Perth have been great to us as well - generally the further from home you are, the better reception you get. The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? Hands down the Sydney show of our Album launch tour last year. We played to a pretty packed Annandale and people were just going absolutely nuts. It was hot, sweaty and everything you want from a show... except for people climbing onto the stage and wrecking our pedals! Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Would have to be me, lately I've been trying to get away with lots of electrohouse but that always gets shut down pretty quickly. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? Well I'm not sure who it would be now, but our old guitarist Ash would have to buy at least 15 trashy magazines and 30 bottles of Dare iced coffee over the course of a tour. At the end of the trip the wreckage would pour out the doors like a flood. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? I do bad vegetarian farts. Most embarrassing moment on tour? Getting brutally lost, pulled over by the police, honked at by passing truckies whilst peeing, it's all pretty shameful. Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… One time in Brisbane a tour promoter drank an entire schooner glass of Karina's vomit. Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? A case of Coopers Pale Ale, red wine, bottle of Jager, Marlboro Lights. Also I'd like to note that this phone call has never happened and probably never will. RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? The new Hot Chip & PNAU records. Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Cassette Kids from Sydney should be the biggest band in Australia this time next year, it's really scary how flawless they are. If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? Although the internet is making radio less & less relevant, it's still really hard to be successful in this country without the support of Triple J. Also, everyone needs to get off their high horses and just have fun from time to time! As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… Get back to work! |

BRITISH INDIA :::::: |
THE BASICS Name : Declan Band : British India Job In Band : Vocals Website Address : www.myspace.com/britishindia HOME Hometown : Melbourne Hometown is best known for : Good coffee, unpredictable weather, highly polluted river Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : Bands are all very close together in Melbourne which leads to a lot of band intermingling, lots of venues, kids can spot fakers. Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Gotye Best up and coming band from your home town would be : The Reptiles, Neon Love, Children Collide THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? British India is the name of a clothing boutique in Singapore which, while holidaying on the little island, I encountered and entered. The boutiques clientele is made up mostly of obscenely rich women who I can only assume are the wives and mistresses of business moguls, the shop is staffed by acquiescent Chinese and Malay women who wait on the customers en mass. The deliberate and contemptuous out datedness of the place really resonated with me, no doubt due, in part, to my studying of post-colonial literature at uni at the time. The dust of colonialism was so thick on the place it seemed to beg the question ‘How far have we really come?’ the name seemed appropriate to us because, though far from a political band, we try to examine and challenge peoples attitudes. When did the band begin and how did it come about? In 2004, the four of us teamed up in the last year of high school, with a mistrust for normality and common interest in brit-pop and punk as motivator. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Guitar music. What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Our record is called Guillotine and it’s 11 of our songs, some are fast punk songs and some are slower pop songs but it’s all very natural sounding. The record is civilization. What image do you think / hope your music conveys? We openly attempt to unease and shock people with our music, but apart from that vague credo I like to think we’re fairly anti-image or at least anti fashion. In five years time the band will be… Making music hopefully enough. I do honestly think in my heart that we are the most important and exciting band on the face of the earth at the moment, but as far as fame and accolades are concerned we’re all fairly happy just to make our music onstage and in studio. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? In my early teens I was introduced to skate punk, bands like NOFX, Pennywise and Rancid, music which glorified sitting around in car parks, loitering shopping centres and gate crashing parties, and thus became the soundtrack to our lives. Since then my tastes have expanded but my relationship with the music has changed very little. As for playing music myself it was not until nic actually handed me a guitar and told me what to play that I even considered it. What was your first band name and what style did you play? The Curtins, in homage to the liberal prime-minister (our pot shot at the Whitlams) our music I’m ashamed to tell you, was mellow folk fusion in the vein of British cringe inducers Gomez. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection At the Drive-In – Relationship Of Command, The Smiths – The Queen is Dead, Wu-Tang Clan – Enter the 36 Chambers Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given Don’t let other people write your music for you, could extend to producers, but was intended as an anti fashion statement. Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road Ting Tings and Paramore, do you see what I’m getting at? Can you see the connection at all? Why didn’t I just say Ashlee Simpson? Favourite song of your group? Nic the Poet The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is The shows The thing you least look forward to before a tour is The Airports When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Combing through record shops, slaving over crosswords and sudoku, disco dancing. ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? I use a 1985 Japanese Fender Strat, and a Crate amplifier which a friend found in an antique shop. Will plays a fender Jazzmaster bass, nic plays a Gibson SG through Marshal amps and matt plays premier drums Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? I like Sydney and Adelaide for their cities but Perth and WA has the best people The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? The last time we played Amplifier bar in Perth, I was a bit sick before we went on and it must have forced me to play with abit more discipline. Also the Sydney big day out, right from the first song we just seemed to lock in. Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? A lot of old music, quieter stuff like Beach Boys or even country music, the Hank Williams, O brother where art thou soundtrack and stuff like that. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? None of us are particularly messy, and if we were to be you wouldn’t find anything particularly offensive, music magazines, gig guides, water bottles, books most likely. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? Well Matt [O’Gorman, drummer] sleeps a lot, but it doesn’t annoy anyone enough to warrant the term bad habit. Most embarrassing moment on tour? I’m always embarrassed on tour, the company I keep is truly frightful Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? Champagne always creates a good mood, we sometimes even take a bottle onstage. RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Primal Scream Screamadelica, I really can’t seem to get my head around it, it’s certainly not rock music. I also listen to Wilco a lot at night. Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Jaguar Love, a continuation of Young Machetes, I can’t keep off their myspace page. Very melodic but quite unlike anything you’ve ever heard. If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? Major label bands getting the red carpet treatment only to create debt and mediocrity while independent acts are left to stew under the stairs. I wouldn’t change that actually, stewing under stairs is the genesis of amazing music. As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… Go downstairs and make tea. Thanks |

Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : It is very diverse Most influential band to yourself that's come out of your home town : The Butterfly Effect Best up and coming band from your home town would be : The Butterfly Effect THE BAND What's the story behind the band name? We don't talk about it When did the band begin and how did it come about? Rob and I began having a secret musical affair behind the back of some bands we were in. We realized after a while that we were onto something and axed the other bands. Stew was in the band I had been cheating on and I couldn't face being in a band without him so I confessed and asked him to join. Luke joined us late last year following the departure of our old drummer and now we feel complete in a dysfunctional family kind of way. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Frantic rock. What's your current release? Tell us a little about it… We have a self titled Ep which showcases a few different styles we like to dabble in. What image do you think / hope your music conveys? The message is all very positive. If a song happens to start at a negative viewpoint it always involves a resolution. In five years time the band will be… squashed in a bus touring Europe having our own personal Playstation Portable tournament which I will be winning. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? Listening to Pantera in the back of a mates car. Lines The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is that first sweet servo stop where you load up on junk food from the bay maree The thing you least look forward to before a tour is how in 4 days time I would have eaten macca's 10 times and be convinced that a lazy cheesy is actually good for me When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Atm that is all we do. ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? A shure beta 58 Favourite place (city/town/country) you've toured… and why? The best show you've ever played was… and why? BDO 08… it was HUGE. Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Adrian Donadei (sound engineer extraordinaire.) he tortures us with John Mayer. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? Rob!!!! Absolutely anything!!!! Who in your group has the worst "bad habit" on tour, and what is it? Rob… is way to competitive with PSP in the van… he owes Adrian our sound guy $7240 in lost bets. Give us a good quick 'on the road' story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… A certain unmentionable member shat his pants just before we went on stage in Canberra recently and the band had to wait while he changed. Too much macca's RIGHT NOW What's getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Cog and John Mayer (unfortunately) Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Sleep Parade from Melbourne… they are amazing. As soon as I've finished answering these questions I'm about to… hop in the tour van and drive to Byron Bay for a show. |
