Just threw around words we liked till we had Dirt River Rodeo...and someone thought we said radio....and it was settled When did the band begin and how did it come about? DRR started almost a year ago... I got back from living in El Paso Texas with a book of lyrics written from the last couple of years and moved into this fucked up apartment in Richmond, Melb (it was literally being torn down around me ) and just needed to start a new band. Had been introduced to real country music while living in the states and wanted to combine that with what i was writing. Heath was the obvious choice to team up with due to his father being in rodeo and had grown up with country and rockabilly music. We had also missed playing together as we'd both been in different places around the world the last few years and were looking to do something brand new. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Were a mix of Counrty, Blues and balls out rock'n'roll. The bastard love child of Gram Parsons and Malcolm Young. What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… The EP. is called 'Come Back Romance, All Is Forgiven'. It's our first release and a combination of the first group of songs we wrote. The title is taken from Melbourne poet Kerry Scuffins book "Laika's Run". We're really happy with the record and feel we were truthful and honest with ourselves in the songs and the performance. We wrote songs from the heart and didnt try to be anything we're not. Fuck it.. it's the truth. What image do you think / hope your music conveys? Getting Drunk in a bar, singing along with your friends. In five years time the band will be… Releasing more records and touring.....still writing whats true to us. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? My Austrian Uncle sent me a Cream record.....that was it......i was hooked. The end turnaround in Crossroads was the moment. The band rips back into the verse and ginger Baker is just on fire....one of the finest musical moments i can recall. What was your first band name and what style did you play? Sixtortion....a 60's revival band but played fast and distorted.....i was 11. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection Gram Parsons - GP AC/DC - If You Want Blood Neil Young - Harvest Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given. This is an E chord... Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road. Das Musik Mann and Ryan Adams (prob him taking us on the road) Favourite song of your group? All My Friends.....was a really special moment when we recorded it.....it was a sad song but also a tribute to alot of people around me......on the day we recorded it a group of friends came into Sing Sing Studios and sang the last chorus....a special moment for me. The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is Just getting on the Road The thing you least look forward to before a tour is The Food When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Drinking, Reading, Partys and hanging out with my girl. ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? Vox AC30, Fender Telecaster, Maton Acoustic. Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? New York......beacause it's New York....nothing quite like loading your gear into a venue in Brooklyn or Manhatten. The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? Theres been alot that iv'e loved ....i dont think i could choose one. Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Who ever is driving has control... After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? Dirty Mike......the name says it all.. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? Me prob being drunk and obnoxious. Most embarrassing moment on tour? Me being drunk and obnoxious. Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… on advice from my attorney i cant answer that question. Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? Cocaine RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Grinderman Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why The Braindead Lovers...because they're a fellow St Kilda band..they work hard and write good fucking songs. If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? Bring back people with vision and loose the pop star australian idol mentallity thats taking all thats real from music. As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to.... Have dinner with friends. |
