THE BASICS Name : Ryan Felix Caesar. Band : Children Collide. Job In Band : Drums. Website Address : www.childrencollide.com HOME Hometown : Melbourne. Hometown is best known for : Shopping, apparently. Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : Variety. Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Easily the Birthday Party. Easily. Best up and coming band from your home town would be : Witch Hats, the Stabs or Deaf Wish. That’s a hard one. THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? Well, I wasn’t in the band at the time, however have heard the story enough to know it well. Heath and Johnny were living in a house together and a troublesome bill was presented to them and their fellow residents. In an effort to encourage the payment of the bill, Heath wrote “Children, collide!!” on it. Being poor and bored due to payment of said bill my two illustrious band mates formed a band, naming it after the unifying payment scheme devised by Heath. True story. When did the band begin and how did it come about? Like I said before, I wasn’t there, but I’ve been told it had something to do with late night jams on stoner riffs. It makes sense to start a band when you’re drunk too. I’ve done it a thousand times. How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Excited young men with instruments trying to play louder than each other. What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Well, we’ve got a single that has just gone out to radio called social currency. We recorded it, and an entire album with a lovely man called Dave Sardy in a place called Hollywood. It was an eye opening experience and we’re all better men for it. What image do you think / hope your music conveys? Well, I think that is something that is up to others to judge. I hope it paints some sort of picture of where we come from and who we are. It does to me. In five years time the band will be… Playing at Waves in Wollongong. OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? I’m not sure. There was no singular incident. I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember and have never wanted to do anything else. What was your first band name and what style did you play? My first proper band was called Hegemony. We thought we were sonic youth but we played weird 50’s surf sounding tunes mixed with walls of feedback. Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection 1) The Birthday Party: Junkyard. 2) Scott Walker: Scott 3. 3) Suicide: Suicide. Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given “Shut those drums up, you’ve been playing for 5 hours”…… Wearied neighbor to me when to me when I was 17. Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road The Wahas: VERY young band from Sydney. They are amazing. Average age of 17. Deaf Wish: A not so young band from Melboune. Their most recent (and only) album is fortifying my soul daily. Favourite song of your group? My favorite song off our new album is a song called skeleton dance. The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is Being in confined spaces for extended periods of time with my fragrant brothers John and Heath. The thing you least look forward to before a tour is Realizing that I haven’t done my washing and will inevitably be the far more fragrant member for a while. When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Pouring drinks, Starting new bands, complaining about things. ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? I use Pearl drumkits and Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks and Remo drum heads. Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? Probably Austin, Texas. We were there for SXSW and it was the beginning of my first long tour with the band. The town itself was amazing but during SXSW it transforms into a literal city of music. It was incredible. The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? My favorite was a show we played in the basement/dungeon of a place Johnny and I were living in that we were moving out of a few days later. It was at about 3am and everyone was in fairly “high spirits”. Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Well, I’m the one who seems to bring the most cd’s on tour so usually me. We do, however, follow strict democratic guidelines in the choosing of cd’s. After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? After a week in the van, the mess usually melds into one. In the van assortments of sweaty shirts, empty bottles and stale jokes filthy the surroundings. Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? There is no single worst habit. We all have several horrible traits. The worst one we share is an immediate desire to argue/prove points with each other when we’re drunk on scotch. Most embarrassing moment on tour? Touring the Beasts Of Bourbon, I told Brian Henry Hooper that I loved him. I was being deadly honest too. Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… A couple of days ago our tour manager drove the 12 seater van we were all in into a carpark with a significantly lower clearance than was required for such a large van. Hilarity ensued, the van’s roof was decimated. An expensive lark. Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? Scotch. I have some points to prove. RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? Lee Hazlewood’s “Love and other crimes”. Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Abe Vigoda. Amazing band I saw play in LA. Lovely bunch of guys to boot. If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? Ego. Tiresome musicians and their ego’s. As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… Fare evade on the Melbourne public transport system. |
