THE BAND
How long has the band been going? We played our first show
in June 2006, so 4 years now.
Many lineup changes along the way? No, all original
members.
How would you describe your sound to the average person on
the street? We play punk rock that is fast with lots of mathy
bits.
What's your most recent release? Tell us a little about it...
We are about to release our second album, its called 'The
Two Chief World Systems' and it has 13 tracks. It was recorded by
Lachlan Mitchell, who has done our last 3 releases. We definitly took
a longer and more considered approach in making this record, and we
are really happy with how it turned out. It will be released on Poison
City Records on July 5.
Got a favourite track that you have released so far?
The Machinations of Gilbert Ryle is a song on our new album, we haven’t
played it live yet, but I’m looking forward to playing it on
our album tour.
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously
about playing it? I had been listening to a few punk bands
in the 90’s, but when I bought NOFX’s Ten Years of Fucking
Up VHS I really wanted to play in a band, it seemed way better than
playing cello in a String Quartet.
What was your first band name, and what style did you play?
Next to Nothing, it was fast punk rock…haha. It’s strange
because when we started Lungs, we made a conscious effort to play
in a band that was in vein of the bands we had grown up listening
to.
Most prized music related item you own? I have a
sunburst P-Bass with a speckled red scratch plate. I went halves in
it with my parents for my 21st birthday.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is...
Hanging out with friends I only get to see when we go on tour, and
eating at Lord of the Fries.
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is... Early
morning flights are the worst!
When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you
usually found doing? I have two jobs as a Youth Worker and
a Support Worker at a Homeless Service, plus I’m studying full
time doing an Arts/Social Work Degree at Sydney Uni. It keeps me out
trouble. Other than that and band stuff I like to have a few tinz
with friends and hang out with the main squeeze.
ON THE STAGE / ROAD
Best rider item you've ever received without requesting it?
I once drank some of A Death in the Family’s rider at the Enmore
Theatre. Pretty good.
Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured…
and why? There are so many great places to play, but The
Arthouse in Melbourne is like a second home to us. It will be a sad
day when it closes its doors to live music.
Most memorable show you've played? and why? We played
with Propagandhi in February ‘09 at the Metro in Sydney. They
have been my favourite band for such a long time, and it was the first
time I had seen them live. It was amazing.
Worst 'guilty pleasure' artist / song you've come across on
a bandmates iPod? Adam has some bad ass P-funk on his, luckily
it doesn’t come out too often haha
Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on
tour, and what is it? Tom has a habit of disappearing without
telling anyone, its always fun when you need him for something.
RIGHT NOW
Where are you? At work.
What's the last song you listened to? Tearing up
the Oxygen, by Maritime.
Which band or album is currently rockin' your world?
I saw Break Even play last Sunday at the Bald Faced Stag. They are
such a great band. Best band I have seen in a long time!
Tell us a band we should all go and listen to right now?
Between the Devil and the Deep. They have just released 2 new songs
that are really good; they will also be on their debut LP which is
due out later in the year I think.
IF ONLY...
If you could pick any one album to cover from start to finish, what
would it be and why? Maybe I-Spy’s Perversity is Spreading.
I think that would be a lot of fun. They are an excellent band too!
If you could pick any one band / artist to cover one of your
albums from start to finish, what would it be, and why? Ha.
I don’t know… possibly Descendents covering our new album.
No fuck it, Break Even.
If you could pick one band to re-unite so you could play a
one-off show with, who would it be, and why? The Scandal
from Hobart. Great band.
One big tour, you can take two currently active bands to support
you, who would you choose, and why? Following Sea from Melbourne
and Between the Devil and the Deep from Sydney. Luckily they are playing
some of the shows on our album tour hey! |
