THE BAND
How long has the band been going? We’ve been going
for about two years now but it doesn’t feel like that long!
Many lineup changes along the way? Our original bass
player left and was replaced by the gigantic, loveable lumberjack
(Drew) you see today. We used to have a second guitarist but we’re
100% happy with the way we’re going as a three piece.
How would you describe your sound to the average person on
the street? Always a tough one. If you say “rock”
you might as well say “music”, it’s not exactly
descriptive. If you say “punk”, you look like kind of
a dick, but that’s basically what we are, a punk rock band with
the emphasis on the rock as opposed to the punk.
What's your most recent release? Tell us a little about it...
Our debut album “Songs the Devil Taught Us” just came
out April 30. It’s been a long road to this album, we recorded
it quite a while ago so it’s really cool that it still sounds
as good to my ears as the day we finished it. It’s ten tracks
of straight up, aggressive but melodic rock music (think The Bronx
meets Foo Fighters).
Got a favourite track that you have released so far?
“Abandon Ship” or “Old Uncle Scratch”, you
can listen to them on our Myspace and both are on the album. Lyrically
“Old Uncle Scratch” is a favourite, a bit of a cheeky
take on the story of the Devil. There’s a lot of Devil references
on this record for some reason…
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously
about playing it? My Dad, he always played in bands and I
always thought it was awesome, looking at the old photos, meeting
the characters he used to get in trouble with. I think the first band
I got hugely into would be the Presidents of the United States of
America. They played a big part in getting me wanting to play rock
music. That self titled album still owns like a motherfucker!
What was your first band name, and what style did you play?
Well the first band that played shows was called The Purple
Hearts, when I was about 17. It was basically a Hives/Saints/Noise
Conspiracy rip-off. Ah, high school bands….
Most prized music related item you own? My black
Les Paul Custom. Such a beautiful guitar.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is...
meeting new people, seeing new bands, catching up with friends in
other cities, being on the road with my best friends, hopefully partying
a bit!
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is...
probably the smell of the van. Although I have to say, in a three
piece it’s not that bad. And we’re all fairly clean individuals.
Unlike some other bands I’ve been in!
When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually
found doing? Being a hopeless bum, occasionally working in
a bookshop, writing tunes, reading, going to shows. Music is all I
care about.
ON THE STAGE / ROAD
Best rider item you've ever received without requesting it?
What’s a rider?
Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured…
and why? Probably Osaka, Japan with an old band. Amazing
city, the whole country is just full of the coolest people and awesome
food.
Most memorable show you've played? and why? Recently
playing with Lungs and Paper Arms, two of my favourite Australian
bands, was a highlight. Also a Halloween show where we pulled out
a surprise set of Black Sabbath covers without telling anyone, that
was off the hook! I got to be Tony Iommi AND Ozzy for a night!
Worst 'guilty pleasure' artist / song you've come across on
a bandmates iPod? Too many to name. I don’t see anything
as a guilty pleasure though- if you like it, you like it!
Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on
tour, and what is it? Probably our drummer Christian and
his dad jokes. He recently became a father and the sense of humour
is coming to him a little too easily!
RIGHT NOW
Where are you? At my house!
What's the last song you listened to? “Stuart
and the Ave.” by Greenday. Anyone who claims not to like “Insomniac”
is deluding themselves.
Which band or album is currently rockin' your world?
The most highly cranked of late would have to be the latest Clutch
album. That band is a damn good time.
Tell us a band we should all go and listen to right now?
Lungs. Best band in the country right now.
IF ONLY...
If you could pick any one album to cover from start to finish, what
would it be and why? Maybe “Suicide Invoice”
by Hot Snakes, because it just kicks epic amounts of arse and it would
suit us (mainly because we rip that band into the ground).
If you could pick any one band / artist to cover one of your
albums from start to finish, what would it be, and why? Dillinger
Escape Plan. Just to see what they would do with it! Or maybe Kronos
quartet, to indulge my cheese-eating, “I’m an artist”
side.
If you could pick one band to re-unite so you could play a
one-off show with, who would it be, and why? Hot Snakes,
because it is one of the greatest tragedies of my life that I never
got to see them. One of the coolest rock bands ever, and criminally
under-rated.
One big tour, you can take two currently active bands to support
you, who would you choose, and why? Paper Arms, because they
are great dudes and an amazing band, and U2, just so I could say for
the rest of my life that U2 supported my little band. And so I could
steal Namibian breast milk and bottled dew of the first morning light
and whatnot from Bono’s rider. |
