THE BAND
How long has the band been going?
Evergreen Terrace has been together since 1999, we just celebrated
our 10 year anniversary show at the beginning of the year. 10 long
year of pain wrapped into one show. It was awesome. I even purposed
to by girlfriend during Stretch Arm Strong’s set that night. Casey
Jones has been together since 2003 and you wouldn’t think it because
we act like amateurs.
How would you describe your sound to the average person on
the street?
I’m assuming that you mean how would I describe it to a street person?
I would explain to them that both bands give a similar feeling of
finding a dry piece of cardboard or a box of potatoes; a feeling of
excitement, comfort and nostalgia. It’s pretty much music that your
parents would hate. At least mine do, except for my Dad. He is a freak
of nature.
What's your most recent release? Tell us a little about it...
Evergreen Terrace just released a new record called 'Almost Home'.
Buying it should a priority on your things to do list. It has a good
balance of the melodic side of ET and the heavier side of ET. We wrote
the record in a span of 3 months and was surprised that it actually
didn’t sound like shit.
Got a favourite track that you have released so far?
On Almost Home my favorite songs right now are Enemy Sex and Sending
Signals. Both are different in style but I think show what we do best.
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously
about playing it?
I grew up on punk rock but never had any interest in playing an instrument
of being in a band. When I was 12 my Mom told me “I’m not going to
have lazy sons so you and your brother are going to have to learn
an instrument.” She wanted me to play the saxophone and my brother
to play keyboard. Neither one of us had any interest in those instruments
at the time we told her we were only going to do it if we played guitar
and drums. One visit to the pawn shop and there I had it, my first
guitar. Made by Hyundai. I bet you thought they only made cars.
What was your first band name, and what style did you play?
It was called PMS, which stood for Punx Making Sound. Pretty good
right? I’m sure you can guess what we sounded like. We had songs about
getting ran over by 18 wheeler trucks and cool stuff like that.
Most prized music related item you own?
The grammy that I won in 2006. I couldn’t believe it when I won, I
still can’t!
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is?
Getting in the van and not knowing what the tour is going to bring
and the excitement of thinking “Will the van make it to the first
show?”
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is?
Leaving my fiancé. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s the truth. The hardest
part about being in a full time touring band is keeping a relationship.
When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually
found doing?
That isn’t often, but going to the movies, eating and then going to
the gym because I ate too much.
ON THE STAGE / ROAD
Best rider item you've ever received without requesting it?
A car battery for our van. We played this weird place in the backwoods
of Georgia. The people at the club had no clue how to put on a show
but they knew how to give southern hospitality. The guy said he looked
online to see what kind of van we had and then went and bought a battery
for it because he figured that would be good to have on the road.
Pretty random but pretty righteous.
Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
NASA space station in FL. We played there for a bunch of astronauts.
We got to hang out in the anti gravity room so it was pretty much
like we were in outer space. Astronauts like to mosh.
Most memorable show you've played? and why?
When I was 14 my band at the time opened up for Face to Face. It was
the first “big” show I played. There were about 900 people and the
show was only us and Face to Face. After the first song it was dead
silent and I remember this huge guy with dreads yell “You suck!” Hahaha.
Worst 'guilty pleasure' artist / song you've come across on
a bandmates iPod?
Oh god. Chris, who is our current tour bass player, has the worst
shit on his ipod. I don’t know where he finds this shit. He has some
terrible pop punk / hardcore band that he always plays that covers
“Party In the USA” It’s the worst.
Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what
is it?
Craig, he is always losing stuff. Usually he will claim that someone
stole it and then 3 minutes later will find it in his own pocket or
backpack. Haha.
RIGHT NOW
Where are you?
Gainesville, FL sitting Indian style on a bed.
What's the last song you listened to?
Boys No Good – Buried At Sea. They’re a new band from Jacksonville.
Check them out – www.myspace.com/bngjax
Which band or album is currently rockin' your world?
Black Flag – My War and Me and Mark – EP
Tell us a band we should all go and listen to right now?
Me and Mark – www.myspace.com/meandmark
and Boys No Good - www.myspace.com/bngjax
IF ONLY...
If you could pick any one album to cover from start to finish, what
would it be and why?
U2 greatest hits. I wouldn’t want to cover a heavy record. U2 is one
of the greatest bands of all time and I think we did a pretty good
job with Sunday Bloody Sunday when we covered it so I’d be down to
give the rest a crack.
If you could pick any one band / artist to cover one of your
albums from start to finish, what would it be, and why?
Our last record, Almost Home. I think that in some crazy way you could
make those songs into any style or genre.
If you could pick one band to re-unite so you could play a
one-off show with, who would it be, and why?
Minor Threat or Operation Ivy. Simply because there has never been
an opportunity for me to watch them and they were both big influences
on me.
One big tour, you can take two currently active bands to support
you, who would you choose, and why?
Weird Al and Rancid, but if I’d like to play before both, haha. |
