THE BAND
What’s the story behind the band name?

Jeff got it from a scene in Billy Madison.

When did the band begin and how did it come about?
Technically the band started in '98, but that doesn't count really since they broke up after playing only one show. Jeff and I reworked a couple of the old songs in 2001. We recorded said songs and used them to recruit the rest of the band.

How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street?
Pop-Punk Beard-Prog'N'Roll

What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it…
We released a self-titled album on June 26th of this year. We were fortunate enough to have the spectacular Lou Giordano produce and engineer the record. It's a lot more upbeat than our last record and the lyrics are (slightly) more positive. We're extremely proud of how the album turned out and if you're a fan of anything from Knapsack to Foo Fighters, Lifetime to Third Eye Blind or Samiam to Weezer you'll dig it.

What image do you think / hope your music conveys?
5 dudes making honest, rocking, thought-provoking music.

In five years time the band will be…
Hosting dog-fights or drinking champagne out of golden thermoses.

OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it?

Hearing a local band when I was in 7th grade. It made me realize that bands were made up of weirdo shit-bags just like myself.

What was your first band name and what style did you play?
Ah, Christ...we were called "Treebeard". I was in 10th or 11th grade at the time and we played stuff that was sort of a mix between Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate and Grade.

Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection
The Crew by 7 Seconds, The Band (The Brown Album) by The Band, Hatful Of Hollow by The Smiths

Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given
I read an interview with Mike Melovin in 2004 (I think) where he said something to the effect of, "Play what you love and play it like you love it. Listen to what you are playing. The notes are the map not the trip." I wasn't given the advice directly, but it's good advice for anyone.

Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road
The Saint Alvia Cartel, Living With Lions, Olympia (and yeah, I know that's three)

Favourite song of your group?
Swift & Unforgiving

The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is
Touring

The thing you least look forward to before a tour is
Getting horribly sick

When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing?
Reading, seeing my girlfriend, playing Scrabble, drinking, smoking, sleeping

ON THE STAGE / ROAD
What gear do you use?

I use a Shure SM58 microphone, Sennheiser EW300-IEMG2 in-ear monitors with Sure E3 earphones.

Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
I'm still a sucker for the hometown crowd.

The best show you’ve ever played was… and why?
There have been many crazy shows over the years. It's hard to separate a lot of them.

Who hogs the stereo in the van the most?
That would be Jeff...but he also does almost all the driving.

After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there?
We're all fuckin' pigs. Our van is a horrible mess within days of hitting the road.

Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it?
We're all chock full of terrible habits.

Most embarrassing moment on tour?
Any time I get sick and lose my voice is horribly embarrassing.

Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever…
During our last U.S. tour, three of the dudes got arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of an open alcohol container and trespassing. We were in Delaware at the time and I remember being woken up by a phone call from Jeff early in the morning. He gave me the skinny and I went back to sleep. All the dudes wanted to do was smoke a joint and have a drink or two on the beach. It's a sad world we live in where that's considered a crime.

Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider?
Crown Royal

RIGHT NOW
What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now?

Welcome To The Night Sky by Wintersleep and Boys And Girls In America by The Hold Steady

Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why…
The Saint Alvia Cartel. I live with three of these guys and I also took care of the graphic design for their record. Rob Pasalic (our original guitarist) plays guitar and does a lot of singing in the band as well. They're Just a totally solid band.

If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be?
Don't get me started. I hate pretty much all of it.

As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to…
...have a smoke.
