THE BAND
What’s the story behind the band name?

We were originally called Local Pricks and played hardcore and old school punk. Over time our style changed and the name no longer suited so we decided to change our name when we moved from Perth to Melbourne. The movie came out a year later and everyone mistakenly thinks we got our name from the comic strip. We just loved the gambling, drinking, sleazy vibe the name evokes.

When did the band begin and how did it come about?
Tom and I used to live together but played in separate bands. I was in an all girl riot band called Plump and Tom played in Lowdown with Josh (aka Devil Fingers). I had just written a really fast punk riff and wanted to know what drums Tom would put to it. We had a jam and it was just magic. We wrote another two songs on the spot, smoked a carton of cigs, got rip roaringly drunk and decided to start a punk band.

How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street?
Pop/Rock with a splash of Punk and a lot of Spunk

What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it…
Getaway is the second single off our CD Hungry for Love. The opening riff/verse was actually an old Lowdown song I used to adore. We took that and wrote a new chorus and vocal line for it and it was only finished a few days before we recorded it for the album. The single is actually a double A side, the other track being “Can You Feel It” which has a Glam Rock feel and is a live favorite.

What image do you think / hope your music conveys?
We just try to write fun catchy music that gets stuck in your head.

In five years time the band will be…
Five years older

OFF THE STAGE
Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection

Divinyls, Dan’s Hits of the 80’s Vol 1-8, Misfits and god there’s so many more.

Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given
Not to listen to anything crap that gets said or written about you. As long as it’s being written it’s all good! In fact someone wrote a really dodgy review about us and thanks to them I now have a new song.

Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road
KISS – I’d love to use their stage and fly out over the crowd on a rope. I wouldn’t have to worry about forgetting my hairspray or eyeliner either.
MOTLEY CRUE – Tom could fulfill his fantasy of playing on a spinning drum kit after bad food, rocket fuel and 11 hrs of car sickness

Favorite song of your group?
We’ve got a couple of new songs at the moment which are great to play live. One’s quite a rocking track and the other’s a pop tune. We usually love playing the faster tracks live as we get a big rush off putting on an explosive show with heaps of energy and entertainment.

The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is
Knowing you’ve got one hell of a party coming up

The thing you least look forward to before a tour is
Knowing it’ll be a long time before you get full feeling back in your arse from the car seats and dreading smelling like “van”. That smell permeates into everything and is hard to get off!

When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing?
Working, drinking tea in front of the heater with my Chihuahuas, going to gigs, the usual I guess

ON THE STAGE / ROAD
What gear do you use?

Overdrive Baby!

Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
They all mash into a big blur after a while. We love anywhere that has great people and cheap booze

Who hogs the stereo in the van the most?
Definitely Tom but he drives most and the rule is whoever drives DJ’s. Josh always gets to drive/DJ around 4am and puts on Blood Brothers but then feels guilty cause we’re all trying to sleep so never gets to listen to it. Mik always has the best mix CD’s. He should really drive more!!

After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there?
Josh always takes a Coles bag with a wine cask, plastic cup and le snac (a la cheese and crackers) on tour. He’s the messiest but every time we stop and stumble off for food Tom the nanna cleans up the van

Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it?
Tom loves singing non-stop to Punk. The singers on the cd are out of tune, Tom’s out of tune…..its torture. He also loves to make eye contact during a conversation which is scary when he’s talking to someone in the back seat.

Most embarrassing moment on tour?
Mik jumping off stage to strike a rock pose, slipping on his own spilt drink and sliding at great speed across the floor on his back and crashing into the table holding the fold back speakers. I was quite impressed though, he kept playing the whole time!

Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever…
Our old bass player Andy used to moon people through the sun roof when we left the venues on tour. One night it was so cold he got his balls stuck to the roof and he lost skin on re-entry

Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider?
Find out just how happy he wants to make us then find out where the hell Tom is cause he’s our manager

RIGHT NOW
What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now?

1950’s show tunes

Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why…
Bombing Angels - great Distillers style punk band from Geelong. They play lots in Melbourne so check out their MySpace page for dates also check out The Loveless and Rocket to Memphis

As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to…
Watch Bold and the Beautiful, have a glass of wine and get out of my PJ’s.
