THE BAND
What’s the story behind the band name?

Pauly says that it was the name of their best song at the time. The song got re-recorded for Voodoo Pins and Violins Ep a few years back.

When did the band begin and how did it come about?
It began as a three piece after the break up of Kamikaze Harry. Paul Steve and Val started jammin with a faster sound and without the horns etc. I joined as the second guitarist in 05 and Adam took up from Val not long after.

How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street?
ah, if they didnt know what i meant by mid-late 90's melodic punk, id just say fast punk rock, with melody. And if he was still trippin i'd prob lend him all of my fat wreck samplers.

What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it…
Album, Smiles That Scream released this month through Pee Records and Radtone Music Japan. Its a 12 track cd that is mostly new ones with a couple of old songs we'd never recorded before. It was recorded and mixed by Murray Adamson who used to drum in Self Titled and mastered in Italy by Alessandro Vanara who does a shitload of work for Ryan Greene.

What image do you think / hope your music conveys?
Ah i guess no image really, if you look at us we're just four lads who love to play this kinda stuff still (even if we're 10 years too late!) and its cool when you see other people living in the past too!

In five years time the band will be…
Trying to convince Dr. Steven Wales to keep playing bass for us!

OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it?

When my mate lent me Cheshire Cat in and it didnt leave my cd player for about a year. He wasnt happy.

What was your first band name and what style did you play?
Vas Deferen. Pretty much NOFX style stuff! With a few NOFX n Lagwagon covers also! good times.

Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection
No Use - Hard Rock Bottom
NOFX - Punk In Drublic
Sublime - 40 Oz to Freedom

Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given
'no matter what anyone says or how much shit gets in your way, just stick together n keep playing!' - Dave Nasi, No Use.

Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road
Reason Strikes + MKJ Top lads, Sic music!

Favourite song of your group?
Probably 'Will Not Rest' off the newie.

The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is
Probably just the unknown of where the nights will take us and how they'll go down. Its always sic waking up on a couch with empty beer bottles and not a person around, and realising your in a random house in the burbs of Launceston!

The thing you least look forward to before a tour is
Forgetting my towel. i do it just about every time, and i have to share with Paul. We've established rules for the towel use though when this happens.

When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing?
Surfing, Snowboarding, Skating. Uni or working!

ON THE STAGE / ROAD
What gear do you use?

ah epi Les Paul Black Beauty, Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 60w head, with the trusty ibanez Cab.

Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why?
Prob Hobart. The Ballpoint lads showed us this bush on the way to the pub after the show that you have to jump in to. You just have to run and jump into it as hard as you can and hope you dont land on a branch! The local chicks were the best at it! But im pretty sure got branched. Glenelg was sic too! and just Adelaide in general.

The best show you’ve ever played was… and why?
Ahh, my personal favourite was our EP launch in 06 at the Yallah Roadhouse. Was a big night in a sic venue! Was sic havin all our mates there along with so many people i'd never seen before!

Who hogs the stereo in the van the most?
Whoevers in shotty

After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there?
Yeh we dont really get our own space really the whole car usually just looks like a bombs hit it. Im pretty sure it still does too haha. I guess all kinds of shit, like subway wrappers and other fast food rubbish. Oh and there's always a t-shirt that was worn on the first night and it usually smells like cat piss. Or kebab. The usual owner of that shall remain nameless!

Who in your group has the worst 'bad habit' on tour, and what is it?
mmm theres many. But maybe the gig pig and his Melbourne sleepovers at alanis morrisets house? That would have to be up there!

Most embarrassing moment on tour?
Being introduced as 'Lost in Love' and advertised as Last in Line, Lost in Wine and Lost in Tune and random points over the years!
I can understand how they got confused, id say most of those names describe us pretty well! ha

Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever…
Haha when we took a crew down to Melbourne and Paul was heaps putrid, at the start of a song his pants fell down and he proceeded to play the whole song in his undies and his expression didnt change one bit! Gold!

Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider?
A little bit more awkwardness when we play. I live for an awkward moment on stage! And just endless beer.

RIGHT NOW
What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now?

No Use - The Feel Good Record Of The Year

Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why…
Reason Strikes. They're fuckin sic lads with a One Inch Punch/Brazen Hearts (2 ex-members) style real ballsy. Just heard their new EP due for release in June and its off the richtor!

If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be?
Remove all the strugglers from it. There are so many strugglers i wouldnt even know who to start with.

As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to…
Try find a wave!
