THE RESTLESS WORDS :::::: |
THE BASICS Name : Joel Band : The Restless Words Job In Band : Vocals Website Address : www.therestlesswords.com HOME Hometown : Perth Hometown is best known for : Sun, Sea, girls Best thing about the music scene in your hometown : How many sick bands it’s produced Most influential band to yourself that’s come out of your home town : Change Of Face Best up and coming band from your home town would be : Four Disorder/Burning Fiction THE BAND What’s the story behind the band name? Taken from a song of our EP called “Unsaid”. We we’re looking for a change at the time and felt that it fit perfectly. And didn’t rhyme with anything obvious (except for dooshless turds…) When did the band begin and how did it come about? We began in 2003 with Mitch and Walt starting off jamming together. They tried one bass player before myself who was kicked out due mostly to the fact he had a belly button piercing… I joined, we decided only ever to play original stuff and here we are now with a couple of extra members! How would you describe your sound to the average Joe on the street? Fast, energetic, melodic What’s your current release? Tell us a little about it… Current release is a 7 song EP titled “Lights On St.George” in the vein of Strung Out, Rise Against, A Wilhelm Scream and is out through Pee Records (Green Media Distro). It was released April this year to great reviews… Album in the works at the moment What image do you think / hope your music conveys? We write songs about what’s going on with us at the time – If someone can relate to it and gets something out if it that’s rad… I like to think conveys a fun image cos at the end of the day we’re playing cos we enjoy it. We don’t like Bands who take themselves too seriously In five years time the band will be… In a gutter… but still playing to anyone who will listen OFF THE STAGE What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? My cousin owned an old Fender P copy that I nicked off him to play when I was about 15. I learnt to play Longview by Green Day and was hooked… Then learnt gutar and finally picked up the microphone – haven’t quite learned that yet though. What was your first band name and what style did you play? My first band didn’t really have a name and we only jammed together for a bit… So I guess this would be my first proper band (with a name at least) which started as Evolved. Always been pretty much skate punk style of music Tell us three albums you couldn’t live without in your collection A Wilhelm Scream – Mute Print Strung Out – Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues Rise Against – R.P.M. Best piece of musical advice you’ve been given Play it cos you love it Two groups/artists you’d love to take out on the road Stand Defiant and Rex Banner Favourite song of your group? Every new song (unrecorded at the moment) makes a mockery of our old songs… but off the EP, ‘Empty’ The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is The chance to hang out and drink with mates we’ve made on tour around Australia The thing you least look forward to before a tour is The tour ending… always the longest time before the next one… Also the smell of the van – that never goes down too well hungover When your not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Not doing band stuff? Hanging out with girlfriend/mates havin a couple of quiet beers ON THE STAGE / ROAD What gear do you use? Standard Shure vocal mic… nothing too special… though I do also have my esp viper to write with Favourite place (city/town/country) you’ve toured… and why? Tassie… People are awesome down there and it’s got such an awesome countryside. Sick punk rock scene too!! The best show you’ve ever played was… and why? NOFX support at the start of this year. Sold out at Metro City in Perth – Just awesome to share the stage with a band you’ve followed for so long Who hogs the stereo in the van the most? Me! And we’ve got a nice selection of 80’s power ballads this time round… After a week in the van/bus on tour which band member will have the messiest section, and what would we most likely find stashed there? Mitch… barbeque chips and an assortment of coke, pepsi and other soft drinks Who in your group has the worst “bad habit” on tour, and what is it? Pom… Snoring… deadset Most embarrassing moment on tour? First show of the last tour we did at The Crown and Anchor in Adelaide… we played like shit and to end it, on the last song Ryan flipped his guitar and managed to absolutely smash a fluorescent light above him… glass flew everywhere Give us a good quick ‘on the road’ story, funny, embarrassing, memorable, whatever… When we were in Melb mid this year just before we headed down to tassie we went out for a night on the piss with mate sean from remain opposed. We went to a couple of pubs before deciding it was time for the strippers… being pretty pissy we got denied by a two or three before one finally let us in. By this stage we we’re all pretty poor so being a smartarse Ry threw 5c to one of the birds… She got devastated about the whole thing (understandably I guess) before she ran at him attempting to kick him in the head with a monster stiletto… naturally we got chucked out by the bouncers… Tried to get in a couple more but it just wasn’t our night Your manager calls and says the venue you are about to play really wants to keep you happy, what’s the first thing you chuck on the rider? Beer, beer, sambuca, girls (for Ry) RIGHT NOW What’s getting the most spins in your stereo right now? A Wilhelm Scream – Career Suicide… awesome tech punk album Tell us a band or artist everyone should check out and why… Internationally… No Trigger – On Nitro Records, playing an vocally aggressive but real melodic brand of punk rock… awesome stuff. Locally… Stand Defiant – Awesome band that work real hard and are great dudes If you could change one thing about the music industry today, what would it be? Take out the bullshit ego side of things As soon as I’ve finished answering these questions I’m about to… Go home and crack a beer… been a looooong day at work! |
