Obey The Brave are currently riding high on the release of their ‘Young Blood‘ album. The band features ex-members of heralded deathcore outfit Despised Icon and metalcore quintet Blind Witness. To find out more about this new album of theirs, they have answered our On The Record questions this week. Expand this post to check out the answers. ‘Young Blood‘ is in stores now through Epitaph on CD and Vinyl, you can order a copy online [Here].
Tell us about the release title.
“Young Blood” is about getting through all the bullshit of life and having a positive outlook of it. It’s about doing what you love the most. You only got one life to live!
Tell us about the artwork.
For the artwork, we’ve hit up our friend Felix Rancourt who has done previous work with Despised Icon, Ion Dissonance and Beneath The Massacre to name a few. We told him we wanted something simple that would have the logo of the band as a solid crest on it. We immediately thought of an old ass book and Felix came back to us with that design. It looked perfect.
What format/s will it be released on and how will it be packaged?
“Young Blood” has been released as a CD, also as on vinyl and is available on iTunes!
Who will it be released through, and when?
It was released late last month through Epitaph Records (Worldwide) and Distort Entertainment(Canada). Really stoked!
Tell us about the studio and why you chose to record there?
Choosing a studio was an easy task for us. We went to .357 Productions. It’s owned by our friend Tony (who also plays guitar in Ion Dissonance) has a studio in Longueuil (Montreal south shore) and has done previous work with.
Did you go into the writing process with a clear direction in mind?
We didnt have a clear direction of what we wanted our sound to be. We wrote the music with the influences we had and after writing a few songs, we clearly knew what we were going for.
Were you listening to anything in particular during the writing / recording process that influenced the songs at all?
Pantera, Alice in Chains and the liquor have definitely been a huge influence in the writing process. That’s all we needed!
How long did it take to record?
It took just a little bit over a month.. We were going at the studio twice a week and took our time to make sure everything was perfect.
Tell us a little about the recording process the band used?
John Campbell, is the main writer of the band, Alex writes the lyrics and everyone else puts their ideas and thoughts into the song, once the first rough track is sent to everyone.. Since 2 of the members are from Montreal and 3 from Ottawa, it’s pretty hard to rehearse and write songs during a jam session.. The best bet is to do it on the computer and send the song back and forth with all the ideas of everyone.
Was this any different to previous processes you have used?
This is the only way we’ve worked and it works great!
Any guests involved? if so, who.. and what did they do?
We’ve got Liam Cormier of the Cancer Bats who does a guest appearance on “Self Made”. Also have Kevin Mchaughey from Ion Dissonance, laying some vocals tracks on a massive breakdown in “Time For A Change” and finally, we’ve Keith from Ligeia, who does some clean signing during the chorus on the last track of the record “Burning Bridges”
Any particular equipment outside your usual live gear used in the process?
Not really.. We used 5150′s for our live shows and this is what we recorded the whole record with, nothing can beat those monsters!
Any memorable studio moments?
Well, i’m personally vegetarian and got pranked by the restaurant right beside the studio.. they put chicken in my order and only grabbed a bite of it since i thought there was only tomatoes in my sandwich, still manage to get me sick, and literally puked right outside the hot tub that was located outside the studio, while the guys were hammered laughing at me.
Any additional tracks recorded that didn’t make the cut but may see the light of day sometime?
We’ve recorded 11 tracks and that’s what we have for now. We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished so far and I think that we’re more than happy of the direction the band is going into!
What track/s are you most looking forward to playing live?
I’m really pumped to play “It Starts Today” since it’s the latest music video that got released, i think the fans will be pumped to hear it! Also, we have a french song on the cd.. back where we come from, people are really stoked on it since it’s our roots and I think it’ll be a sick track to play on our upcoming Canadian tour. Garde la tete froide!
How would you compare the final product to previous releases?
Our first actual release was “Ups And Downs” EP on Goodfight Entertainment.. It included the tracks “Get Real” featuring Scott Vogel of LA’s Terror and “Live And Learn” which was the very first track we released as a band.. “Young Blood” is the continuation of it.. It’s our first full length album. It includes those 2 tracks and 9 brand new ones for a total of 11 killer tracks!
