West Australian’s Sugar Army are back and ready to release their new, and second album ‘Summertime Heavy‘ on Friday September 7th via Permanent Records / Shock. THE BAND
How did the band first come to exist? Funnily enough, the night I jumped through a back window of a bar to gain entry, I met our drummer James and we formed Sugar Army.
How long has the band been going? 8 years
Any particular story behind the name? We like putting two words together that are a juxtaposition.
What’s your most recent release? Well, our next record is named Summertime Heavy. It is to be released on the 7th of September through Permanent Records/Shock
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? My Dad played a lot of blues music when i was young. I also learned to play the guitar from a young age.
Any particular band / album or song that you personally credit as a major influence? I really like too much. At the moment i’m Listening to Air – Le Voyage dans la lune. Their latest record.
Your first band name, and what style did you play? School Band – Blues
Most prized music related item you own? My piano from Berlin.
When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Playing some kind of sport horribly.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is… trying new local ales from each city we go to. Also, any new experience gets me excited about a tour.
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is… having no sleep and early starts.
ON THE STAGE
When on offer, what’s your one must have item on the rider? Patron tequila
Favourite place you’ve toured… and why? Airlie Beach – The weather is perfect.
Most memorable show you’ve played? and why? The old Hyde Park Hotel on NYE of 2006, it was one of our all time favourite gigs. It was 6 years ago now. I can still feel the great vibe in the room.
Got a favourite song to play live? Summertime Heavy, its a new song and it translates even better in a live sense.
Any embarrassing on stage moments come to mind? I’ve ripped my lead out way too many times.
Any pre-show rituals? I like to write the set list and have a few beers.
What do you find is the hardest aspect of touring in a band today? Waking up.

Tell us an up and coming band or artist you think we should go and listen to right now? Usurper of Modern Medicine.
What’s on the cards for the next few months for the band? Releasing new album Summertime Heavy and touring. Possibly writing a new record.

You can pick any one band / artist to cover one of your albums in full, what would it be, and why? Air – Sorry i keep bringing them up. But id love to hear their interpretations of one of our albums.
One band you wish you were able to see live but never had the chance? Led Zeppelin.
One venue you have yet to play that you would love to? Madison Square Garden.
