Japanese outfit Crossfaith were featured on the second Soundwave Festival announcement last week on the back of their ‘Zion‘ EP which was recently released through Halfcut Records / Shock. To find out more about the release, the band answered our On The Record questions this week. Expand this post to take a read of his answers. You can pick up a copy of ‘Zion‘ in preparation for their first Australian tour [Here].

Tell us about the release title.
ZION is appeared in a famous movie “The Matrix”, There are so many people who wake up from virtual reality called “Matrix”, which means this record bring you to next level! So we named our new ep as “ZION EP”.

Tell us about the artwork.
The Artwork was made by Australian illustrator Toby Fraser. When we started making this EP, we wanted to create our symbol. But it had taken a pretty long time cause we gonna hold it on our shoulders. Finally we made it and so proud of the great work!

What format/s will it be released on and how will it be packaged?
I’m a big fan of physical. So this EP was made as Digi-pak, it’s so simple but I like it. Actually we’ve started thinking about format for next record too.

Who will it be released through, and when?
It was released through Halfcut Records on August 10th.

Tell us about the studio and why you chose to record there?
We recorded at The Machine Shop which located in NJ, USA. When we started Crossfaith, we had a dream which is going to the states for recording. That’s the reason why we choose to make a record not in Japan.

Tell us about the producer / engineer and why you chose to record with them?
Machine is famous for his past work with Lamb Of God, The Amity Affliction, etc. And he’s an incredibly nice guy! We really love him and he got passion for sound creating and gave us many great ideas. Of course, we’d love to work with him again.

Did you go into the writing process with a clear direction in mind?
I don’t think so, we discussed about the direction over and over, also spent so many days for making this one.

Were you listening to anything in particular during the writing / recording process that influenced the songs at all?
Yeah, I listened various songs during songwriting, especially Underoath make an impact upon me.

Were there any albums you were referencing to aim for a certain type of sound production wise?
Each guy brought some references for own part. But I think we didn’t have an idea as clear direction from others.

How long did it take to record?
It took almost 3 weeks. We did recording through Xmas and New Year’s Eve too. haha

Tell us a little about the recording process the band used?
Machine tried an interesting way of tracking which we were not familiar with in the past, like he used 3 different head amps for guitar tracking and blended each sound.

Was this any different to previous processes you have used?
Yes, there’s a big different point. On the recording of our previous record, tracking and mixing were completely separate and it wasn’t the same guy who did it. But all of the processes on this one had been done by Machine.

Any guests involved? if so, who.. and what did they do?
Not on this time, but we’re thinking guest vocal for next record.

Any particular equipment outside your usual live gear used in the process?
Teru (Program/Vision) used moog and virus synthesizer on this record.

Any memorable studio moments?
Machine invited us to his family Xmas party and we ate fantastic turkey which his wife made! It was unforgettable for us.

Any additional tracks recorded that didn’t make the cut but may see the light of day sometime?
We decided to cut some songs before recording. Because we never want to release the record with songs which we’re not satisfied with.

What track/s are you most looking forward to playing live?
Jägerbomb! That song has a funny phrase “Why don’t you take a drink and chug it!” and I want you to scream these words at the show!

How would you compare the final product to previous releases?
I think sound production of “ZION EP” is so much better than our past records. But I couldn’t compare which is great cause “ZION EP” and previous records are not same at all.

Anything else you want to say or tell us about the release?
Go check it out! I swear that it’ll be your favorite record of this year! Cheers!
