Name : Stu
Band : Thick Skin
Job In Band : I yell at people
Website Address : http://thickskin.bandcamp.com
Hometown : Brisbane
Hometown is best known for : Being jerks about sport.
Best venue in your hometown : It WAS Between The Walls… Thanks Brisbane City Council.
Favourite show you’ve seen in your hometown : Any show that involved Just Say Go, Against or Mindsnare.
Favourite show you’ve played in your hometown : Total Attack 2, or any Burst City show including Knife Fight!
How did the band first come to exist? Started as myself, Nate, Sam and Allan (Just Say Go/Fires of Waco) wanting to start a straight edge band on a youth crew tip. But things mutated and Nate and I wanted a more really Boston sound, Al left and the rest is what it is.
How long has the band been going? since 2010
Any particular story behind the name? It’s a Stop And Think song.
What’s your most recent release? Tell us a little about it… We just dropped a 7″ called “Wolf” on Arrest Records Australia. It’s 7 tracks of hardcore.
Got a personal stand out achievement of your band to date? We’ve had the privilege of playing with a lot of cool bands in a short space of time.
OFF THE STAGE
What was your first introduction to music that made you think seriously about playing it? My first introduction to music was listening to stuff like The Beatles, The Zombies, The Doors, Hendrix, Clapton etc in the car with my Dad as a kid. I got into punk / bad metal in high school then fell in love with hardcore soon after. My love for hardcore / the live show made me want to start doing bands.
Any particular band / album or song that you personally credit as a major influence? I like all sorts of music, I’m influenced by everything from In My Eyes, CCR, S.O.D, Deftones, KRS ONE, Immortal Technique, James Brown, Mindsnare, Toe To Toe, Terror… everything.
Your first band name, and what style did you play? Right Back At Ya… a very very poor man’s Buried Alive. Second demo sounded like S.O.D and wasn’t disgraceful.
Most prized music related item you own? I lost all my records in the 2011 floods, but today I got ‘In My Eyes’ – “Nothing To Hide” on white w/ the Revelation Can Suck It cover in the mail.
When you’re not doing band related stuff, what are you usually found doing? Drawing/Designing, CrossFit or eating curry.
The thing you most look forward to just before a tour is... my only real commitment being getting to a venue on time.
The thing you least look forward to before a tour is… what’s not to look forward to? maybe farts?
ON THE STAGE
When on offer, what’s your one must have item on the rider? I don’t drink or ever score some sweet rider, so some free water is fine with me…
Favourite place you’ve toured… and why? Newcastle in one of my old bands Values Here… Raj’s Corner and the Bogey Hole. Two magical places!
Most memorable show you’ve played? and why? In Thick Skin, probably Total Attack 2 or Knife Fight/Teargas. Both nights the feeling was right and kids set it off!
Got a favourite song to play live? “You and Me” or “Wolf”
Any embarrassing on stage moments come to mind? If I have a chance to talk I normally end up offending someone.
Any pre-show rituals? Vocal warm ups and I stretch a lot because I tend to get really tense..
What do you find is the hardest aspect of touring in a band today? Being able to afford it, petrol/flights don’t come too cheaply.
Last song you listened to? “Perspective” IN MY EYES
Last album you acquired? new: Stick Together “Surviving the Times” 7″, old: IN MY EYES “nothing to hide” LP
Which band or album is currently on high rotation? the above, Diamond “Don’t Lose Your Cool”, Walk The Moon “Anna Sun” EP and PAC DIV “The Div”
Tell us an up and coming band or artist you think we should go and listen to right now? Outright from Melbourne bringing the Indecision vibe!!! Survival from the Gold Coast, if you like NYHC a la Madball and No Warning style, check them out. Milestones from Brisbane too, post-90′s emo style.. such talented blokes. Also, Little Shadow, Nazi Dentist and Shackles.
What’s on the cards for the next few months for the band? Try and tour this 7″ as much as we can and we are already writing a follow up tape too.
You can pick any one album for your band to cover in full, what would it be and why? that’s way too hard to answer, I’d say a Black Sabbath record maybe? “Paranoid” or “Master of Reality”? That’d be cool…
You can pick any one band / artist to cover one of your albums in full, what would it be, and why? I don’t even know how to answer that question, it’s well beyond me!!
One band you wish you were able to see live but never had the chance? In My Eyes, Step Forward, Iron Boots, Mental, Stop and Think, The Wrong Side, Minor Threat, Youth of Today, Bad Brains, Inside Out, Mouthpiece, Ten Yard Fight, Chain Of Strength, Jimi Hendrix, CCR, The Doors, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, James Brown, RUN DMC… there’s too many!!!
One venue you have yet to play that you would love to? I’d love to play HQ and 208 in Perth, two great spots with so many awesome hardcore bands playing there over the years.
The chance comes up to fill in for a member of a band for one tour, which band would it be, and why? I’d sing for Terror any day.. but Scott Vogel is irreplaceable. MAXIMUM OUTPUT!!!
A headline tour overseas comes up, tell us two bands you’d take along to support your band. Support my band? no way in hell… I’d beg Mindsnare to head the thing and would probably get Outright along for the ride too!
Got any final words? Support local hardcore, local record stores and each other!!!
