Top 20 Releases of 2011 – #16 & #15
on December 7th, 2011Time to reveal the next two releases in our Top 20 Releases Of 2011 countdown. Coming in at #16 is Sydney three piece melodic rock / punk outfit The Optionals and their ‘Bash It Out For Their Lonely Heads‘ EP that they released independently in May. Taking up position #15 is the ever popular Frank Turner and his latest effort ‘England Keep My Bones‘ which was released in June via Epitaph Records. #15 - Frank Turner – England Keep My Bones - Epitaph Records
Released in June via Epitaph Records, but we got a little sneak peek of some tracks when he debuted them on tour in April, Frank Turner keeps pumping out the albums, and the quality isn’t slipping. This one, a little more full band sounding than solo, but that doesn’t take the focus off his great songwriting and solid delivery. All the usual sing-a-long anthems we’ve come to expect can be found on here and once again he’s served up a great album start to finish. Keep ‘em coming Frank!
Hopefully the next time we see him in Australia it will be in full band mode with The Sleeping Souls. I don’t think he’s left the road this year, always touring somewhere with someone continuing to build his popularity, so we may be fighting a few other countries to get him back here.

#16 – The Optionals – Bash It Out For Their Lonely Heads – Independent
Stupidly underrated for a stupidly long time, this EP from these Sydney guys followed their solid ‘Dead To Realise’ album of a couple of yeas back, and as good as that one was, this one took about 3 steps up quality wise. Tunes that don’t leave your head any time soon after giving it a spin. A couple of them should’ve been all over the radio. Strong both lyrically and musically, tight as a nut live too, I daresay this one wasn’t heard by as many people as it should’ve been. There’s still time to rectify that as you can pick it up at Poison City / Fist2Face / Beatdisc, but unfortunately it seems a little up in the air as to whether you’ll be able to catch them live in the near future. Hopefully they get sorted and back on the stage / in the studio as this EP proves there’s still quality tunes coming out of this kitchen.
As mentioned, you may/may not be able to catch them live again, with a member leaving, things seem to be on hold for the moment.
