Top 20 Releases of 2011 – #12 & #11
on December 9th, 2011Before we hit the business end of the countdown next week, we have #11 & #12 to reveal in our Top 20 Releases Of 2011 countdown. Scoring the #12 position is Melbourne outfit Jonesez for their second independent album ‘Gruffalo‘ which was released a couple of months back and is bursting with indie-rock goodness. Coming in at #11 in the countdown is Tasmanian dudes Luca Brasi who’ve had a busy year prior to and since the release of ‘Extended Family‘ via Broken Bones / Poison City Records, fast becoming a local favourite for many, and for good reason too. #11 - Luca Brasi – Extended Family - Broken Bones / Poison City
These Tassie guys were definitely one of 2011′s breakthough local punk bands. A few trips across to Melbourne, plenty of local shows and they’ve found themselves with an army of new friends and fans. One of those bands that you can straight out tell they love what they do, and are doing it for all the right reasons, the fact they make damn fine tunes is just a bonus on top of that. ‘Theme Song From HQ’ is the kind of song that just sums up the band nicely, and this album is packed full of good time / honest punk rock. They’ve set the platform for a solid future. I’m sure 2012 will be even bigger for the band.
Melbourne folks can next catch the band at the Poison City Xmas party at The Tote next Friday 16th December. Other states, catch them next year on their ‘Extended Family’ tour. Details [Here].

#12 - Jonesez – Gruffalo – Independent
For those old enough to remember your weekend mornings glued to Recovery finding new bands, the most common sound you’d hear is this exact blend of punk influenced indie rock. At it’s peak in the late 90′s, this Melbourne outfit prove it can still sound good today. They had a great debut with ‘Betty’s Soup’ and have stepped up a notch from this with this gem. It’s not the kind of album that will shine instantly on fresh ears, you’ll catch the hooks and all, but it needs a few listens for the real charm to start coming through, and when it does, good luck putting it down. Why triple j isn’t all over this I do not know, it’s packed with catchy little ditties that should be heard by many more ears. One of the years more fun albums.
Keep an eye out for a new video clip for the track ‘Way Superior’ in the near future.
