Bomber
Is: Editor / Head Honcho.

It was sometime in early 1999 when I made the transition from a muckaround year or two old listen.to/bombshell page to bombshellzine.com

Back when paper zines were all over the place, guestbooks were rife, ICQ and the #frenzalrhomb & #punk rooms on MIRC were the way you kept in touch with folks, and street press was pretty much the only way you found out about upcoming gigs.

One of the Melbourne street press rags had an online version with a few columns of content and I thought I'd have a crack at doing what zine makers were doing on paper, online and cover all of the country, not just one city, though everything was really Sydney centric for a while.

A few (rather dodgily arranged) interviews were set up, gig dates copied from the street press ads, lots of spamming on IRC and a few mates feeding me news, and we had a website, that turned into a bit of a monster.

Eventually word started spreading and shows were setup under the 'Bombshell Blitz' banner to keep word spreading, and content just kept flowing in.

There isn't too much excitement in the middle, a few bands getting cut about talk on the forums about them, or reviews they didn't agree with. A few crappy site designs, (think it's crap now, should've seen it ten years ago!) A few legal threats in there, some attempted domain stealers, but best of all, heaps of good times.

These folks rule, they have all at one stage contributed interviews, reviews, articles or other stuff to help out the website.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS THAT MAY HELP YOU OUT

Where did the name Bombshell come from?

A song by Operation Ivy, called, funnily enough 'Bombshell' check it/them out. They rule. [www.operationivy.com]

I'm in a band and I want to be featured on Bombshell, what do I have to do?
Simply send us emails with your news blurbs, add us to your mailing lists, keep us up to date with what you are doing. Submit your gigs in the Gig Guide, sign up for our newsletter, send us your news to be included in that. If we dig your stuff, we'll definitely be in touch.

I'm in a band / run a label and I want this CD reviewed on Bombshell, what do I have to do?
Sure thing post along your CD with a basic bio and we will give it a listen, we would love to cover everything that comes in, but there just aren't enough hours in the day, generally the more we dig it, the more chance we will cover it on the site and be in touch for any other things we may be able to offer. Please don't hound us with 'when will the review be up?' e-mails, that's a surefire way to make it straight to the bottom of the pile. Please do look around the site so you know what you are sending us is relevant, if you are not sure, e-mail us and ask.

I don't have CD's to send, do you accept digital submissions?
While actual CD is preferred (we like to look at the whole package, art, layout, credits etc) we do accept digitall submissions when physical product is not available. Please make sure the files are ripped at a high quality (320kbps is preferred) and supply us with a link to download. Do not send MP3 files via email.

How do I advertise on Bombshell?
Send an email to advertisingatbombshellzine.com and outline what you are interested in advertising, we offer many options, for every budget and like to customise each campaign to best suit, so it's best you ask what we can do via email. Single ads, package deals, you name it, we can do it. Our rates are negotiable and affordable to any budget, and far cheaper than any street press or any website that attracts the same amount of hits (find a better deal somewhere else, show us, we'll try and beat it for you). Make sure you get in early though most sections are booked well in advance (2 months is ideal notice - however short notice bookings can usually be accomodated).

How do i get my gig in the gig guide?
See that link that says 'Submit A Gig' on the gig guide page? use that, and make sure you read the instructions on how to submit, and follow them, it's not rocket science..

I submitted a gig and it's not there?
Give us a few days before you ask, updates happen most, but not all days, if you didn't fill it out right don't complain if it doesn't appear, we don't have the time to mail you to tell you you submitted it wrong so take a few seconds to read the instructions and you'll have no dramas. Oh and make sure the gig is relevant, it is a rock / punk / hardcore gig guide, not cover bands (unless your in Old Music For Old People or the Gimme Gimmies), or washed up old pop singers on the RSL circuit.

Can I do work experience at Bombshell?
Nope sorry, at this stage it's not really possible to offer this officially, but you are always free to submit news, reviews, interviews and stuff like that, if we like your style, we may be able to offer you a regular gig. You'll be credited for any work and are more than welcome to use it in portfolios and whatnot.

Can I write for Bombshell?
Sure, because of what we cover, we usually only have availabilities for interviewers. You need to have access to some kind of reliable device that is able to record phone calls so that you can write up an accurate interview once done. Generally most interviews are at very short notice, and often at odd hours due to time differences. If you are interested in gaining some experience in this field, send us some details about yourself, any previous work, and a list of bands you would be interested in interviewing, keeping in mind that interviews are generally available around the time of a new release or tour.

How much will I get paid?
Here's the deal-breaker, being a small independent website, "getting paid" just doesn't happen i'm afraid, sorry to crush your dreams. We will however do our best to reward you for your work through things like CD's and gig tickets where we are able to.

Can I get a photo pass for this show?
No, sorry, we do not feature photography on the website, and therefore cannot gain photo passes for shows. Had you looked at the website, you'd probably notice the lack of photo galleries.

I saw/heard a band on Bombshell and I want to know more about them can you help?
For sure, while most features etc have a link to bands website etc we'd be more than happy to point you at the right direction, just email infoatbombshellzine.com and i'll try to help you out.

Can you get me into so and so's show for free?
Nope, unless it's in a competition we aint getting you into anything, especially if its a bill of local bands, how 'bout you pay the admission and support them, they need your support.

When is so and so coming out to tour, my friend reckons they heard this of a friend of a friends best mate, is it true?
If we know about it, it will either be on the News page or the Gig Guide, if it's not, well then it could be rubbish or it's in the works, just hold your horses and wait for an announcement, we're not in the business of spreading rumours, we'll only post officially announced info, so we'll tell you when it's known. Can't hurt you to check out the bands website either.

Why isn't so and so playing in our town or state?
I'm sure there is a good reason, look on the ad and see who's promoting the show, find their website and email them, i'm sure they will tell you why.

What's the best way to contact you?
E-Mail - infoatbombshellzine.com is the quickest method, sometimes i'm slow on the replies so if you don't get one, keep hounding, or make your subject "Answer within the hour and I'll buy you a beer", that'll probably get me.

Where can i send stuff?
Send it to Bombshellzine.com - Po Box 8032, Werrington County, NSW, 2747, Australia.
If you are sending internationally, especially from the USA it's probably not best to address it "Att: Bomber", unless you want it opened multiple times by customs and often mega delayed in it's delivery.

Something not answered?
Drop along an email and ask.
